This position is responsible for the processing, packaging and storage of donated human musculoskeletal bone and tissue for transplant in a manner that is consistent with the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), and Health Canada's CTO regulations. We're looking for someone to be trained as a part-time Processing Technician to complete our processing team, and specifically someone who is willing to be trained as a bandsaw operator.
THIS JOB IS CURRENTLY PERFORMED ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS with the occasional MONDAY. Potential candidates must have a minimum availability of approx. 8 am to 4 pm on processing days.
Essential Functions
- Technicians must be able to perform all aspects of processing musculoskeletal tissue allografts for transplant (debridement, dissection, cutting, cleaning and disinfection, sizing, assessing)
- The bandsaw operator must be able to stand for several hours while operating a bandsaw to cut bones to specification
- Accurately document processes/functions performed using controlled record templates.
- Perform post-processing cleaning of equipment and processing areas, and prepare instruments for sterilization.
- Use aseptic/sterile techniques to prevent contamination and minimize the risk of infection.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This person must be able to work as part of a small team in a cleanroom environment while wearing multiple layers of PPE.
- As part of the processing work environment, you may experience potentially unpleasant odours, slippery surfaces, and temperature variations.
- During the performance of processing activities, you may come into contact with materials such as Isopropyl Alcohol 70%, Hydrogen Peroxide, strong detergents and other cleaning agents.
- Overtime work (9 hours or more a day) may be required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Standing for long hours.
- Reaching, bending, and manual dexterity (e.g. must be able to bend and reach to the floor).
- Good balance and general physical fitness/stamina required for performing tasks within the cleanroom.
- Visual acuity for reading small print and text on product labels.
RELEVANT SKILLS
- Ability to work well under pressure and adhere to timed steps/processes
- Exceptional attention to detail and observation skills
- Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques is an asset
APPLICABLE OR RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE
- Operating Room (OR) nurse or similar
- Working as a bandsaw operator in a different industry (e.g. meat processing plant, manufacturing plant/factory, etc.)
- Working in an environment where attention to detail and multi-tasking is required
