POSITION SUMMARY:
The Camp Nurse/Health Care Coordinator (HCC) is responsible in providing oversight for health care needs for all campers and camp staff.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Campers: The nurse/HCC is responsible for having a reasonable knowledge of the condition of each camper at any given time. The nurse/HCC will administer routine and emergency nursing care to campers as needed.
- Camper Assessment: The nurse/HCC is responsible for conducting on site examinations of each camper on the first day to certify general health and verification of information on medical forms.
- Dispensing of Medication: Upon arrival of each camper and staff member, the nurse/HCC will take custody of any medication. She/he will then be responsible for the dispersing of any scheduled/prescribed medication in accordance with each camper/staff prescribed needs. Scott Mission Camp also has over-the-counter medications available to be administered to campers and staff in accordance with the nurse’s knowledge, skill and judgment.
- Infirmary: The nurse/HCC will be responsible for the professional and efficient operation, supervision, and organization of the Nurse’s Station. This station will serve as an infirmary for any camper or staff who require short-term nursing.
- Documentation: The nurse/HCC must document care and medication given in a timely manner, with accuracy and in accordance with CNO standards.
- Service Responsibilities: The nurse/HCC is responsible to keep the Camp Director informed of health, safety, and sanitation issues for the entire camp. The incumbent will also be required to advise of any concerns in relation to campers and staff, including suspicions of abuse, or other critical issues.
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding campers’ health issues.
- The role involves doing some laundry as needed (machines are in the nurse’s station).
- Be on call 24 hours and be available and accessible for any medical needs and consultations.
- The camp nurse/HCC will have additional support from the Manager of Health Services at Scott Mission, who will provide training, inventory/budget support, mentorship, and on site support as needed a couple of times a week in person. The Manager of Health Services will also be available by phone 24 hours a day for any urgent concerns or consultations.
Required Experience and Education:
- Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), or upper year Nursing Student. We are ideally looking for two camp nurses, one of whom should be licensed and the other who can be a nursing student or new graduate pre-NCLEX.
- Ability to work with children and supervise peers.
- Good organizational and supervision skills.
- Ability to give emergency and routine nursing/medical care with confidence.
- Experience administering medication and creating medication administration schedules.
- Understands emotional, psychological, physiological and spiritual needs and issues related to children and youth.
- Absolute confidentiality regarding campers, informing others in the circle of care on a need-to-know basis.
- Personal and professional integrity in matters of relationship, programs and work ethic.
A combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the responsibilities of this position may be considered in lieu of stated education and experience requirements.
