The Opportunity
We are seeking an outgoing, detail-oriented and methodical Underwriter in our Specialty Risk department to support underwriting through data analysis, statistical trending, marketplace information, reporting, and audit assistance. This role is ideal for a candidate who is strong with numbers, comfortable working in Excel, and interested in underwriting and financial analysis. The successful candidate will partner closely with underwriters, business stakeholders, and management to support informed underwriting decisions.
The Underwriter, Specialty Risk plays a critical role in supporting the underwriting process by analyzing business requirements, evaluating risk factors, and facilitating the development of effective solutions. The candidate has a strong desire to learn and build relationships in a fast-paced organization and industry.
What You’ll Be Doing
Key Responsibilities

Compile, analyze, and validate data to develop reports that support underwriting decisions

Evaluate underwriting and portfolio data to identify trends, patterns, and risks, and present findings to business partners and management

Assist underwriters with risk assessment, pricing support, and policy reviews

Prepare and maintain underwriting metrics, dashboards, and performance reports

Support underwriting audits by gathering documentation, reviewing data accuracy, and addressing audit findings

Monitor data quality and ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, policies, and regulatory requirements

Assist with process improvement initiatives by identifying inefficiencies and recommending data-driven solutions

Collaborate with cross-functional teams including underwriting, finance, operations, and risk management

Maintain documentation for underwriting procedures, reports, and analytical methodologies

Provide ad-hoc analysis and reporting as required by management

Attend industry events, develop relationships with key stakeholders to understand industry and trends
Who You Are
You are a detail‑oriented and analytical professional with a strong interest in underwriting and risk analysis. Comfortable working with numbers and Excel, you enjoy turning data into insights that support sound underwriting decisions. You are curious, collaborative, and eager to learn in a fast‑paced environment while building strong relationships with underwriters and business partners.
You bring:

A university degree/college diploma preferred

3-5 years of corporate experience

Previous experience in a financial or financial services company

Previous experience in financial/business analysis

Excellent communication and relationship building skills

Ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively across teams.

Ability to analyze data and use results to identify improvement opportunities.

Excellent project management, organization, planning and time management skills.

Strong attention to detail and quality.

MS Office proficiency: knowledge of Excel pivot tables, formulas, PowerPoint, Outlook, Word.

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Accounting, Mathematics, or a related discipline

Knowledge of consumer warranty or finance & insurance products an asset

The anticipated salary range for this position is 72,000-95,000. Compensation may vary for roles in other regions to reflect local market conditions and currency differences. At Tokio Marine Canada, our salary ranges are designed to reflect the skills, experience, and responsibilities required for each role while providing room for growth. For experienced professionals, offers are typically positioned near the midpoint of the range. The upper end of the range is reserved for individuals who consistently deliver exceptional performance and impact. Candidates who are newer to the role may start below the midpoint, with opportunities to progress as they develop. Final offer decisions take into account factors such as location, relevant experience, and individual skill set.

We work in a hybrid model, and you should expect to split your time between working in the office and working remotely, with flexibility based on the role and the business needs.
We currently have an office in downtown Toronto and will eventually be establishing offices in other provinces. Should you currently work in a province where we do not have an office, you will remain remote until such time as we do establish an office.
