TCI Utilities, a division of Tollestrup Construction (2005) Inc., is seeking a skilled and safety-focused Gas Fusion Technician to join our underground utilities team. This position is responsible for performing polyethylene (PE) pipe fusion for natural gas distribution systems as part of shallow underground utility construction projects. The successful candidate will work closely with field crews to ensure all fusion work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with industry standards, company procedures, and client specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform butt fusion, socket fusion, and electrofusion of polyethylene (PE) gas piping.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, utility plans, and project specifications.
- Prepare, inspect, and verify pipe and fittings prior to fusion.
- Ensure all fusion equipment is properly maintained, calibrated, and operated.
- Complete fusion records and quality control documentation accurately.
- Assist with installation, testing, and commissioning of underground gas distribution systems.
- Work safely around existing underground utilities and excavation activities.
- Conduct pre-job hazard assessments and participate in daily safety meetings.
- Follow company safety policies, provincial regulations, and client requirements.
- Coordinate with supervisors, operators, and labourers to maintain project schedules.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and company equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support construction operations.
Qualifications
- Experience performing polyethylene gas pipe fusion in underground utility construction.
- Current recognized PE Fusion Certification (CSA, manufacturer, or utility-approved training).
- Knowledge of natural gas distribution systems and underground utility installation practices.
- Ability to read construction drawings and utility locates.
- Strong understanding of safe excavation and trenching procedures.
- Valid Class 5 driver's licence (clean driver's abstract preferred).
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Physically capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and performing manual labour.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality workmanship.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on shallow underground utility projects.
- Ground Disturbance Level II certification.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- H2S Alive and CSTS (or equivalent safety training).
- Experience operating small construction equipment is considered an asset.
Working Conditions
- Outdoor construction environment in varying weather conditions.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and lifting.
- Travel to project sites as required.
- Overtime and occasional weekend work may be required to meet project schedules.
