About the Position
We are seeking a detail-oriented Prepress & Plate Production Technician to join our team. This role is the backbone of our print quality; you will be responsible for the end-to-end creation of high-quality screens, offset plates, and ink mixing.
This role requires a candidate who can master the technical process of screen emulsion, exposure, and offset plate preparation. You will be responsible for the entire prepress workflow, from preparing screens and plates to mixing custom ink blends. If you have experience in a print shop, darkroom, or specialized manufacturing environment and take pride in technical precision, this is the perfect fit.
Key Responsibilities
- Screen & Plate Production: Expertly prepare, coat, expose, and wash out screens for screen printing. Prepare and process offset plates to ensure high-resolution image transfer.
- Prepress Workflow: Verify artwork files, liase with the offset and screen print teams, and manage the exposure process to ensure all screens and plates meet strict quality standards.
- Ink Management: Mix, match, and adjust inks to meet precise Pantone standards and substrate requirements, ensuring consistency across all print runs.
- Quality Control: Inspect all screens and plates for pinholes, image clarity, and registration accuracy before releasing them to the production floor.
- Technical Documentation: Maintain meticulous records of exposure times, ink formulas, and plate settings to ensure repeat-order consistency.
- Inventory & Maintenance: Manage the lifecycle of screens and plates: including reclaiming screens, stretching mesh, and maintaining exposure equipment. Monitor inventory levels of emulsions, chemicals, and plate materials.
- Safety & Organization: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe prepress area, strictly following all chemical handling and hazardous material safety protocols.
Qualifications
- Experience: 1–2 years of hands-on experience in a print production or manufacturing environment. Direct experience with screen making (exposure/washout) and/or offset plate preparation is required.
Technical Proficiency:
- Screen Making: Strong working knowledge of screen coating, exposure unit operation, and water-based washout processes.
- Offset Printing: Experience with plate-making equipment and the processes involved in plate development.
- Problem Solving: Ability to troubleshoot technical issues during the prepress stage to ensure production stays on schedule.
- Color Aptitude: A keen eye for color accuracy and the ability to mix, match, and adjust inks to meet specific Pantone standards.
- Attention to Detail: You take pride in your work and understand that following formulas and procedures correctly is key to a high-quality final product.
- Time Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize your workflow, and ensure that screens and plates are ready for the production team on time.
- Environment: Comfortable working in a manufacturing/warehouse setting, including standing for extended periods and following shop safety protocols.
- Organization: Strong record-keeping skills—you enjoy keeping a workspace orderly, tracking inventory, and managing the status of multiple jobs simultaneously.
