This position is classified as an Independent Contractor. Accountant is not an employee of the institution and will operate independently while meeting agreed-upon performance standards and educational policies aligned with PTIRU. The contractor is responsible for their own taxes, benefits, equipment, and work arrangements, and will not be entitled to employee benefits. The role collaborates closely with the various departments but does not hold decision-making authority within the organization.
Position Summary
Cornerstone College is seeking a detail-oriented, highly motivated individual with 3 years of post-qualification experience to manage our full-cycle accounting operations. The ideal candidate will have experience liaising with external CPA firms for audits and year-end engagements.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting & General Ledger: Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with ASPE/IFRS. Manage the general ledger, including preparing and posting journal entries.
- Payroll & Compliance: Lead full-cycle payroll operations, including processing semi-monthly payroll, managing employee tax deductions, and preparing/filing T4 and T4A slips in compliance with CRA regulations.
- Tax Filing & Compliance: Prepare and file corporate income tax returns, GST/HST, PST, and WCB returns. Ensure accurate tax planning and compliance with the Income Tax Act.
- Accounts Payable (AP) & Receivable (AR): Oversee high-volume AP/AR processes, including vendor payments, client invoicing, collections, and credit card reconciliations.
- Audit & Year-End Support: Act as the primary liaison with external auditors and accountants to coordinate year-end audits and review engagements. Prepare working paper files, audit schedules, and financial reports for external review.
- Process Improvement: Review and improve internal control procedures to ensure accuracy and efficiency in financial reporting.
Required Experience & Qualifications
Minimum 3+ years of experience in a similar accounting role, preferably with experience in public practice (CPA firm) or a complex corporate environment.
Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in MS Excel and accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks, Bamboo)
Payroll Expertise: Strong, demonstrated knowledge of Canadian payroll compliance, tax deductions, and T4/T4A processing.
Analytical Skills: Strong attention to detail, accuracy in bookkeeping, and ability to interpret complex financial data.
