Position Overview
PTL is currently seeking a reliable and mechanically inclined Shop Hand.
This role supports the operation of light and medium duty trucks, trailers, hydrovacs, and Vermeer drilling equipment by performing inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs.
· Please Note: PTL is not a certified apprenticeship sponsor and does not currently employ a Red Seal Journeyperson Mechanic. As a result, we are unable to hire registered apprentices at this time.
Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs on company vehicles and equipment including light and medium duty trucks, trailers, hydrovacs, and Vermeer drills
- Assist with HDD tooling changes, including making and breaking connections and preparing tooling such as reamers and crossovers
- Maintain shop equipment, machinery, and tools
- Ensure the shop and parts room remain clean, organized, and safe
- Manage parts inventory, including ordering, sourcing, and price checking
- Maintain inventory records and documentation
- Pick up parts and deliver supplies to field crews when required
- Ensure required supplies are available for crews and staff
- Complete monthly shop safety inspections and documentation
- Communicate proactively with management regarding equipment issues or operational concerns
- Complete required paperwork and documentation daily
- Keep maintenance records up-to-date daily
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management
Skills & Qualifications
- Strong mechanical aptitude with experience working on diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulics, and basic electrical systems
- Experience troubleshooting mechanical issues
- Experience working with utility trailers or construction equipment is considered an asset
- Skid steer operating experience is an asset
- Welding experience is an asset but not required
- Strong attention to detail and ability to complete tasks efficiently
- Self-motivated with pride in producing quality work
- Strong communication and organizational skills
Licensing Requirements
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License with a clean abstract
- Class 3 or Class 1 license is considered an asset
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50 lbs or more
- Ability to stand, bend, climb, and work in various positions including on or under equipment
- Comfortable working in shop and outdoor environments with moderate noise levels
Additional Requirements
- Reliable transportation to get to work (no bus service in the area)
- Willingness to complete required safety training and certifications upon hire
- Ability to work extended hours or shift work when required
- Willingness to travel out of town when required
- Willing to complete company safety certifications and training prior to starting work
Education
- Preference given to candidates with mechanical training, certifications, or related education

Starting Hourly Wage
$25.00 - $35.00 - TO BE DETERMINED depending on experience, mechanical background, and qualifications.
Benefits are available after three months of employment. A three-month probationary period applies to all new hires.
