Location: Edmonton Downtown Office Type: Full-time Reports to: Managing Editor
About WorldAtlas
WorldAtlas.com is one of the web's longest-running geography and travel publications, reaching millions of readers each month with content spanning world geography, travel, nature, history, and science. After more than two decades online, our archive covers nearly every corner of the planet, and our editorial focus is on keeping that coverage accurate, current, and genuinely useful to readers.
The Role
We're looking for an editor who treats fact-checking as the core of the job, not an afterthought. You'll take drafts from a distributed team of freelance writers and turn them into polished, publication-ready articles. That means verifying every geographic claim, catching the difference between a lake's surface area and its watershed, knowing when a "founded in 1847" needs a source, and rewriting prose that reads like it was assembled from a template.
This is a hands-on production role. You'll work in HTML, manage writer relationships, and contribute to content planning driven by performance data.
What You'll Do
- Edit and fact-check geography, travel, nature, and history articles from first draft through final HTML delivery
- Verify factual claims against primary sources: distances, directions, dates, superlatives, population figures, taxonomy, and historical attributions
- Rewrite weak sections rather than word-swapping; know when an article needs surgery and when it needs a rebuild
- Enforce house style, including vocabulary standards, link formatting, and structural conventions
- Audit internal and external links and prepare clean, artifact-free HTML for publication
- Write and refine briefs for freelance writers, including writers for whom English is a second language
- Give writers specific, actionable feedback that improves their next draft, not just this one
- Contribute to content ideation using traffic and engagement data to identify formats and topics worth pursuing
- Flag AI-generated or heavily templated writing and hold contributors to a standard of grounded, specific prose
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years of editorial experience at a digital publication, content site, or similar high-volume environment
- Demonstrated fact-checking rigor; you should be able to describe your verification process in detail
- Strong command of written English and the ability to diagnose why a sentence fails, not just that it does
- Working comfort with HTML (links, headings, embeds, basic cleanup); you don't need to be a developer, but markup shouldn't scare you
- Experience managing or mentoring freelance writers, ideally including ESL writers
- Familiarity with SEO fundamentals and how content performs in search and discovery surfaces
- Genuine interest in geography, travel, and the natural world; the best candidates read our kind of content for fun
Nice to Have
- Experience with Google Discover optimization or traffic analysis
- Background in geography, journalism, history, or a related field
- Familiarity with CMS workflows and structured content delivery
- Experience detecting and editing AI-assisted writing
How to Apply
Send a resume, two or three edited samples (before/after if possible), and a short note about a factual error you once caught that nobody else did.
This is an in-house position where you are expected to come to the office. While we ahve some flexibility that flexbility is earned there is no exception in the begining.
Pay: $50,000.00-$60,000.00 per year
