Job Summary
The Overnight Shelter Employee plays a crucial role in providing a safe and supportive environment for individuals seeking shelter during the night. This position involves supervising low barrier guests, ensuring compliance with shelter policies, supervising consumption, and maintaining a clean and orderly facility. The ideal candidate will demonstrate compassion, responsibility, have lived experience, and strong interpersonal skills to effectively assist guests in need.
Position is for casual on call, sick, vacation and seasonal coverage:
with potential for part time or full time work in the future.
Duties
- Supervise overnight guests to ensure their safety and well-being.
- Monitor shelter activities, provide harm reduction support, and maintain order within the facility.
- Assist guests with check-in procedures and provide orientation about shelter rules and resources available.
- Respond to any emergencies or incidents promptly and appropriately.
- Conduct regular inspections of the facility to ensure cleanliness and adherence to safety protocols.
- Food service.
- Maintain accurate records of guest attendance and incidents during the shift.
- Provide support and resources to guests seeking assistance with housing, employment, or other needs.
- Collaborate with other staff members to enhance service delivery and improve shelter operations.
Skills
- Strong supervisory skills with the ability to manage diverse groups of individuals effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, for clear interaction with guests and team members.
- Compassionate approach towards individuals experiencing homelessness or crisis situations.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle challenging situations with professionalism.
- Basic problem-solving skills to address guest needs and facility issues as they arise.
- Familiarity with community resources available for individuals in need is a plus.
- Lived experience is considered an asset.
