Sources Archaeological & Research Inc (Sources) is seeking an archaeologist experienced with both (a) Coastal Forestry Archaeological Survey and (b) Municipal Archaeological projects. The successful candidate is expected to have Field Director status, or be well along the path to becoming a Field Director, and to have experience working independently. This full-time position is based in Vancouver, B.C., with responsibilities divided between both office and field duties. All of Sources projects are carried out with full First Nation support, the fieldwork carried out with the full involvement and participation of local First Nation archaeological technicians, without exception. This position is appropriate for those applicants who want to work in a smaller, hands-on firm that operates closely with coastal First Nation communities.
Requirements:
- Respectful and engaged sensitivities for working with First Nation Communities, and their concerns with Heritage and Cultural Sites.
- BA/B.Sc. (Archaeology or Anthropology), or greater.
- Proven familiarity with British Columbia coastal archaeology, First Nation permitting systems, and the B.C. Heritage Conservation Act (HCA RSBC 1996, Chapter 187).
- Ability to learn quickly, work expediently, be an enthusiastic part of a team, and work with minimal supervision.
- Applicant must be physically fit and willing to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
- Hold a Class 5 BC Driver’s licence.
- Familarity with word processing and spreadsheet software (i.e. MS Word, Excel, etc).
- Possess skills in archaeological survey and excavation.
Responsibilities:
- Moderate to high level management and co-management (planning, conducting, and etc.) of Municipal archaeological projects. Including First Nation and Client consultation, permitting, and project strategizing and scoping.
- Field participation in Forestry projects, including base-level assistance with planning.
- Preparation of fieldwork background packages (maps, archaeological/ethnographic background, etc.).
- Post-field note digitizing and map preparation, etc.
- Report writing and mapping to current B.C. Archaeology Branch standards and requirements.
- BC Archaeological Site Inventory Form completion and submission.
- Preparation and maintenance of field gear.
- Working with Sources team members to complete reports, site forms, and other permit and project deliverables.
- A working familiarity with the B.C. Forest Safety Council (BCFSC) policies and requirements
