About the Position
We are seeking a reliable, compassionate caregiver to provide weekend coverage and casual relief shifts for a semi-autonomous older couple in their home, while primary live-in caregiver is off duty.
You are:
- Patient and calm under pressure
- Comfortable with developing a collaborative relationship with the older couple
- Skilled at behavioural activation including appropriate communication in the context of rumination, repetition, and executive changes.
- Able to work independently but coordinate with a team in a professional manner (logging, handoff)
- Focused on what people CAN do, not what they've lost
Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve one (1) meal per shift
- Ensure female client eats adequately
- Check in with male client regarding how he's managing
- Companionship and conversation during shift; may require behavioural redirection and engagement activities
- Light assistance as needed, including medication reminders and foot care, laundry, cleaning
- Brief shift notes (meals, activities, meds, observations)
- Communication with care team via text/email regarding any concerns
- Coordination with weekday live-in caregiver for continuity
Requirements
- Legal work authorization in Canada
- Local to the Lower Mainland
- Experience with care of older adults and/or executive dysfunction
- Clear criminal record check
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English
- Comfortable with technology
Preferred qualifications
- First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days)
- Preference for resident of South Surrey
Formal caregiver training (HCA, CNA, PSW, or equivalent)
- Experience with neuro-cognitive and mental health and behavioural activation
- Male caregivers encouraged to apply (client preference for personal care tasks)
- Driver's license and access to vehicle
Working Conditions
- Private home environment in quiet residential neighbourhood in South Surrey: spatious and includes gardens and local recreation opportunities by foot or short drive
- Light physical demands (assisting with walking)
- Occasional challenging behaviours (perseveration, anxiety, compulsive eating) requiring patience and redirection
- Two older adults with different care needs and personalities
- Collaborative environment with existing live-in caregiver and remote care team (including family)
Compensation
- Hourly rate: Depending on qualifications and experience
- This is a contractor arrangement, with invoicing for the time.
- Schedule: 4 hour shifts 1-4 days per week of home visits, pre-arranged timing flexible within 9 AM - 4 PM window as well as evenings.
