SECURITY GUARD
Locations: Northern — Cumberland County, Colchester & East Hants, Pictou County, Antigonish & Guysborough. Western — New Minas, Middleton, Bridgewater, Yarmouth.
Job type: Full-time / Part-time. Shift work including nights, weekends and holidays.

ABOUT THE ROLE
We provide contracted security services to residential properties across Northern and Western Nova Scotia, and we're hiring licensed security guards. Your job is the protection and safety of the residents and the property you're assigned to — a visible official presence, resolving minor situations before they escalate, calling in authorities when they can't be, and documenting everything you see. This is people-facing work in occupied residential buildings, and the guards who do it best are calm, observant, and good at de-escalating without making things worse.
Assignments include fire watch, tenant services, short-term and extended full coverage, construction security, standing by while maintenance or pest control staff enter apartments, and office security.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Walk the exterior perimeter at the start of your shift and at least twice more, checking every door and fire exit is locked and working
- Patrol every hallway, floor, laundry room, common room, furnace room and utility room at least once per hour on a randomized schedule, logging stops electronically
- Check the elevator and all life-safety equipment during hourly patrols
- Maintain a lobby presence — not in an office — except during patrols, breaks and meals
- Review the property rules weekly and enforce them; record names, dates and particulars, and take photos where applicable
- Know who is prohibited under the Protection of Property Act, advise prohibited persons, report entry attempts to the police non-emergency line, and call 911 immediately if one gains entry
- Issue Protection of Property Orders when approved and directed
- Take immediate action on threats to life, security or property; call 911 or the 24-hour answer service; remain on site to secure the scene until authorities arrive; report incidents within 8 hours
- Respond to emergency service requests within 60 minutes
- Keep an electronic log and a daily hardcover written logbook secured at the worksite, and note maintenance issues on your shift report
- Carry the company-supplied patrol smartphone, and keep safe custody of any building keys issued
CONDUCT AND APPEARANCE
Approved uniform with company identifier and photo ID badge visible at all times on property. Neat, well-groomed appearance and attention to personal hygiene. Professional conduct at all times — fraternizing or forming any social or personal relationship with residents is prohibited and treated as a serious breach.
HOURS
Shift work. No more than 12 consecutive hours and no more than 48 hours per week. Emergency on-call coverage runs 24 hours; core hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, with statutory holidays paid as overtime. Weekly hours reports due the Monday following the week worked. Sites are never left unattended.
WHAT YOU NEED
- Minimum Grade 11 or equivalent
- Licensed and bonded under the Nova Scotia Department of Justice, Public Safety and Security — Security Programs
- Fluent English, reading, writing and speaking. ESL applicants: minimum national upper-intermediate level B2, with the score sheet provided before your first shift
- Current CPR and First Aid certificate
- Physically and medically fit, able to patrol all interior areas and exterior grounds
- Strong interpersonal communication and de-escalation skills
- Cultural and socio-economic diversity awareness and sensitivity
- Valid driver's licence
KNOWLEDGE YOU'LL NEED (training provided where you don't have it)
Evidence compiling, recording and storage. Fire prevention and fire marshal training. Multi-unit residential patrol techniques. Landlord rules and the Residential Tenancy Act. Issuing PPA orders and maintaining PPA documentation on site. Appropriate incident response in the building, at entrances and in parking areas. Proper use of force. The role of the RCMP regarding offences on private property. Life safety and essential building systems.
