Job Title: Shop Supervisor – Spooling
Job Description
The Shop Supervisor oversees day-to-day spooling department operations, ensuring all work follows technical drawings, meets project schedules, and supports production goals. This role manages labor, materials, and equipment to maintain an efficient workflow and ensures required parts are prepared and ready for installation. The supervisor leads a team of up to 10 employees, providing mentorship, performance guidance, and support while collaborating closely with Production, Engineering, Quality Control, Safety, and other departments. The position plays a key role in maintaining a safe, organized, and high-quality fabrication environment within a modern manufacturing shop.
Responsibilities

Oversee daily operations of the spooling department to ensure production targets and project schedules are consistently met.

Coordinate closely with Production teams to align spooling activities with overall project timelines and installation requirements.

Review and interpret technical drawings, including isometrics, P&IDs, and general arrangements, to ensure work is completed accurately and to specification.

Plan, organize, and manage labor, materials, and equipment to maintain an efficient workflow and minimize delays.

Ensure all required parts and spools are fabricated and ready for installation in accordance with project needs.

Provide leadership to a team of up to 10 employees through coaching, mentoring, and performance management.

Collaborate with Engineering, Quality Control, Safety, and other departments to resolve issues and maintain high standards of quality and safety.

Monitor fabrication, welding, and production processes to ensure adherence to quality control standards and procedures.

Conduct hazard assessments and actively participate in safety programs to promote and maintain a safe work environment.

Support and enforce safety policies, procedures, and best practices within the shop.

Participate in and support continuous improvement initiatives related to production efficiency, quality, and safety.

Ensure work complies with applicable codes, standards, and internal procedures related to spooling and fabrication.

Assist with scheduling, resource allocation, and prioritization of work orders within the spooling department.

Communicate effectively with team members and other departments to provide status updates and address issues promptly.

Maintain a clean, organized, and well-structured work area to support efficient operations.
Essential Skills
-
Journeyman Pipefitter or Journeyman Welder certification.
-
Valid B Pressure Ticket.

5+ years of spooling experience in a fabrication or manufacturing environment.

Demonstrated supervisory experience, preferably leading a spooling department or similar shop environment.

Strong ability to interpret technical drawings, including isometrics, P&IDs, and general arrangement (G.A.) drawings.

Solid understanding of assembly, fabrication, and production processes within a manufacturing environment.

Strong knowledge of quality control practices and standards related to welding and fabrication.

Experience spooling in an oil and gas environment, specifically compression and process packages.

Proven ability to manage labor, materials, and equipment to support efficient workflow.
-
Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with Production, Engineering, QC, and Safety teams.

Ability to promote and maintain a safe work environment through hazard assessment and adherence to safety programs.
Additional Skills & Qualifications

Supervisory experience specifically in a spooling department.

Field experience related to spooling, fabrication, or installation.

Safety-related certifications such as first aid, equipment operation tickets (for example, zoom boom), or other relevant safety tickets.

Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial shop environment focused on compression and process piping for oil and gas applications.

Experience participating in or supporting continuous improvement initiatives.

Ability to adapt to a structured and organized power structure with clear lines of responsibility.

Comfort working in a modern, state-of-the-art shop environment.

Work Environment
The role is based in a modern, state-of-the-art shop located in an industrial area of the city, near a major commercial district, providing convenient access to services and amenities. The facility focuses on compression and process piping for oil and gas applications, operating as a structured manufacturing environment with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, and organized workflows. The standard shift runs Monday to Thursday on a 4x10 schedule from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with an averaging agreement in place and overtime available as needed. The environment involves working around fabrication, welding, and production equipment, requiring adherence to safety procedures and appropriate industrial attire and personal protective equipment in the shop.
