Reporting to the Manager of Student Experience & Planning within the Student Success department, this role works closely with academic leaders, including Deans and Department Chairs, to ensure the program's integrity and its alignment with educational objectives.
The Co-op Coordinator plays a pivotal role in the ongoing advancement, execution, and expansion of the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) Co-op program. Tasked with leading outcome setting and growth strategies, the Coordinator is key to facilitating the co-op experience for students, employers, and academic departments. It is the responsibility of the Co-op Education Coordinator to empower students by enhancing their employability skills through practical co-op work term placements, bridging the gap between academic learning and professional success. Additionally, the role involves engaging employers to contribute to and benefit from the academic and career progression of our students, while strategically developing the UNBC Co-op program to align with the university’s overarching goals and ensure its sustainable growth.
Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to:
Student Recruitment
- Spearheading student recruitment by communicating with potential and new students, utilizing digital and print media, and conducting presentations and orientations
- Administering admissions, ensuring criteria adherence, documenting accuracy, andcomprehensive student record-keeping; and
- Offering individualized support, addressing student inquiries and providing tailored assistance.
Student Employment Development
- Developing and conducting pre-employment training covering a wide range of topics from the coop process, job search skills, resume writing, interview techniques, workplace norms, cultural competencies, conflict management, communication, teamwork, personal management, networking, workplace ethics, diversity, to labor market trends; and
- Annually updating the pre-employment training curriculum to reflect current needs and trends each May semester.
Student Evaluation
- Evaluating student eligibility for the program based on co-op admission requirements detailed in the current UNBC Academic calendar;
- Creating, evaluating and documenting assignments for co-op work term learning objectives, offer feedback, decide academic pass/fail statuses using employer evaluation; and
- Conducting site visits (virtual or in-person) to gauge student and employer satisfaction with the work term arrangements and outcomes.
Employer Relationship management
- Conducting market and labor trend research to recruit and engage employers across diverse industries, liaising with academic leaders, and ensuring alignment with academic program learning outcomes;
- Maintaining comprehensive records of employer engagement in training, events, and jobofferings, and assess employer satisfaction through site visits and evaluations of student performance; and
- Implementing and managing employer feedback mechanisms, including evaluations and responses to inquiries, to enhance collaboration and effectiveness.
General Program Administration
- Managing and updating job postings using supported platforms, maintain detailed records for tracking and research, and facilitate communication between students, employers, and academic programs to ensure smooth hiring processes;
- Engaging in continuous program development and strategic planning, including adherence to UNBC and CEWIL Canada standards, budget management, and conflict resolution among stakeholders, while ensuring the program's alignment with university objectives and expanding support to additional academic areas; and
- Producing comprehensive annual reports highlighting achievements, challenges, and metrics for success, alongside recommendations for future growth, and actively participate in relevant professional communities to maintain program excellence and innovation.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess an undergraduate degree, together with a minimum of three years of directly related experience that includes the following:
- Demonstrated expertise in developing and implementing educational or training programs, with a focus on enhancing student outcomes;
- Proven ability to assess program effectiveness and provide feedback for continuous improvement;
- Experience in building and maintaining relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including students, faculty, and external partners;
- Skilled in conducting research and analysis to inform program development and adapt to changing educational needs;
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively present information and engage diverse audiences;
- Proficiency in administrative tasks, including record-keeping, data management, and using digital platforms for program coordination; Ability to engage in strategic planning, project management, and budgeting within an educational context;
- Commitment to aligning initiatives with the institution's mission, goals, and strategic planning efforts;
- Strong problem-solving skills, with a proven ability to identify challenges within the educational landscape, develop creative solutions, and effectively resolve issues in collaboration with stakeholders;
- Capacity to compile comprehensive reports, analyze data, and use insights for programenhancement and decision-making;
- Engagement with professional networks and associations within the education sector to keep abreast of emerging trends and best practices;
- Familiarity with policy development, academic regulations, and financial management in a postsecondary environment;
- Working knowledge of the BC Freedom of information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); and Current clear Criminal Record Check and valid driver’s license.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Salary
This position has been classified at a Grade 10. The annual salary range for this position is $74,019.40 to $77,058.80, and the normal starting salary will be $74,019.40 pro-rated based on length of term.
