Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Controller to join our team. The Controller will play a critical role in managing the financial operations of the organization, ensuring accurate reporting, compliance with regulations, and effective budgeting. This position requires strong leadership abilities and a deep understanding of accounting principles and practices.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Administration
- Lead, mentor, and manage the accounting and administrative team.
- Establish clear priorities, workloads, and performance expectations.
- Ensure adequate staffing, cross-training, and process coverage across all administrative functions.
- Promote accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the department.
Accounts Receivable & Billing
- Oversee customer invoicing, collections, and cash receipt processes.
- Monitor aging reports and collection activities.
- Ensure timely billing and effective management of outstanding receivables.
Accounts Payable
- Oversee invoice processing and payment administration.
- Ensure vendor accounts are maintained accurately and paid in accordance with company policies.
- Monitor purchasing controls and approval processes.
Payroll & Benefits Administration
- Ensure payroll is processed accurately and on schedule.
- Oversee employee benefits administration and payroll compliance requirements.
- Maintain payroll-related policies, records, and reporting.
Financial Reporting & Controls
- Coordinate month-end and year-end accounting activities.
- Ensure financial records are accurate, complete, and maintained in accordance with company policies.
- Develop and maintain effective administrative and financial controls.
Operational Support
- Support operations leaders with reporting, job costing information, and administrative resources.
- Identify process improvement opportunities that increase efficiency and reduce administrative burden.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as required.
Success in This Role Looks Like
- AR collections are current and proactive.
- AP is accurate and vendors are paid on time.
- Payroll is processed accurately every pay period.
- Month-end reporting is completed on schedule.
- Administrative staff are accountable, trained, and performing effectively.
- Processes are documented, scalable, and continuously improving.
- Operations managers receive accurate and timely information.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
- Minimum 10 years of professional accounting experience, preferably in the construction or related industry.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
- Experience with payroll processing, tax compliance, and reconciliations.
- Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems.
- Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA designation
- Construction accounting experience
- Strong WIP / job-costing knowledge
- Experience managing payroll for field labour
- Multi-branch or multi-entity experience
- Strong ERP/process improvement background
- Ability to eventually grow into Director of Finance or VP Finance
