Position Title: Full-time (Term) EAL Teacher for Newcomers to Manitoba for the 2026 - 2027 school year
Freedom International School (FIS) is a registered charity in the heart of Winnipeg’s West End serving newcomer and former refugee youth, ages 12-23, providing differentiated, trauma-informed, accredited high school education in a Christ-centred environment.
We are a small, close-knit Christian school whose students come from a variety of backgrounds - all of them require language instruction as well as instruction in the subject area curriculum. Job Description:
Our school is currently seeking a full-time EAL teacher to work with junior high and high school students who are newcomers to Winnipeg. As a trauma-informed teacher, you will be responsible for creating a safe and supportive learning environment for your students, caring for the whole student.
Responsibilities:
- Create and implement engaging lesson plans in the core subjects and practical arts that align with the Manitoba curriculum and meet the needs of language learners who have different learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds.
- Integrate trauma-informed practices into teaching and create a safe and supportive classroom environment.
- Provide ongoing support and guidance to newcomer EAL students to help them adjust to their new environment and succeed academically.
- Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and support staff to develop and implement strategies to support newcomer EAL students and promote their well-being.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student progress, attendance, and behaviour, and communicate regularly with parents/guardians and school administration.
- Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and stay up-to-date with the latest research and best practices.
- Participate in school-wide events and activities.
- Participate in daily Assemblies and in weekly Chapels.
Requirements:
- Strong Christian conviction and practice; comfortable working in a Christian environment and integrating personal faith into teaching.
- Bachelor's degree in Education - valid in MB
- Strong understanding of MB curriculum
- Experience teaching EAL students
- An awareness of cross-cultural and settlement challenges that newcomer students face
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, colleagues, parents/guardians, and school administration
- Commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming learning environment that promotes the well-being of all students
- Demonstrated ability to use technology and other resources to enhance student learning and engagement
- Complete the MB Department of Education “Respect in Schools” training
- Be able to sign the Freedom International School Statement of Faith with integrity
- Prior to hiring, the successful applicant will be required to provide a Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check.
