Family Courtworker
JOB PURPOSE:
The goal of the Family Court Worker program is to assist in reducing the high number of aboriginal people in the justice system, by assisting Aboriginal families to better understand their rights, options and responsibilities when appearing before the courts.
SKILL/QUALIFICATIONS:
· Diploma or degree in the Justice, Social Services or related field of study
· Knowledge of Youth Criminal Justice Act, Child and Family Services Act, Children’s Law Reform Act, Family Law Act and Family Responsibility and Support Arrears Enforcement
· Knowledge of the structure and procedures of the Criminal Justice System
· Must be able to maintain confidentiality
· Must possess excellent interviewing and counselling skills
· Must possess excellent communication skills, written and oral
· Knowledge of Aboriginal language and culture an asset
· Computer literate – experience in using Microsoft Office
· Collecting statistical information for reporting purposes
· Must be honest, empathetic and respectful as these attributes are fundamental to being an effective Courtworker
· Knowledge and experience working with Aboriginal people
· Ability to work within a team-oriented environment
· Work experience in client advocacy and client liaison with various service providers
· Must possess a valid Ontario Drivers license, have access to a reliable vehicle and be willing to travel if required
· Superior ability to work within deadlines under minimal supervision
· Must be able to work with mainstream justice personnel and authority figures in an appropriate manner so as not to cause detriment to the clientele served, the Courtworker program, N’Swakamok or its affiliates
· Must provide a CPIC, which includes screening for vulnerable position
· Knowledge of community resources
