Our client is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to oversee and lead a high-performing, payroll team. This role will be responsible for ensuring accurate and compliant end-to-end payroll processing across multiple provinces, while providing leadership, mentorship, and strategic direction to a small team.
This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who enjoys both people management and being actively involved in payroll operations.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a small team of Payroll Administrators
Foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment
Provide training and ongoing support to ensure continuous development
Oversee and review end-to-end payroll processing for a high-volume, multi-province, unionized environment
Approve payroll to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timeliness
Act as a backup for full-cycle payroll when required
Lead all year-end payroll activities including reconciliations and reporting
Ensure compliance with federal and provincial payroll legislation, including union requirements
Support internal and external payroll audits
Prepare and analyze payroll reports for internal stakeholders
Leverage Excel to manage and interpret large data sets
Work closely with Finance and HR to ensure alignment on payroll processes and reporting
Communicate payroll policies, updates, and changes clearly across all levels of the organization
Participate in and lead payroll-related projects such as upgrades or M& A activities
Support the integration of newly acquired employees into the payroll system, ensuring accurate onboarding, data validation, and alignment with internal payroll processes and policies
Partner with HR and Finance during acquisitions to ensure a smooth transition, including payroll setup, compliance, and employee communication
Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and efficiencies
Qualifications
PCP or PLP designation preferred
Minimum 2+ years of payroll management experience
Proven experience overseeing high-volume, multi-province payroll in a unionized environment
Experience leading and supporting a small, tenured payroll team
Experience with Payroll Software such as Dayforce, ADP WFN or UKG strongly preferred
Advanced Excel skills including: Pivot Tables, XLOOKUPs, Managing large data sets
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong presentation skills
