About Us
We are an earthworks and civil construction company based in Edmonton. We are growing, and we need a financial powerhouse to take the wheel of our accounting operations, keep our project margins tight, and help drive our strategic growth.
The Role
As our Controller, you won’t just be sitting behind a desk crunching numbers—you will be the financial backbone of our operations. Reporting directly to the Executive Team, you will oversee all financial management, project accounting, and internal controls. You’ll partner closely with Project Managers and Estimators to ensure our projects are profitable, our cash flow is optimized, and our financial reporting is rock-solid.
If you understand the difference between a balance sheet and a balance scale, but also know what it means when a project is running behind on its bulk excavation volumes, you’ll fit right in.
Core Responsibilities
- Financial Administration: day-to-day accounting functions, including AP/AR, payroll, and general ledger management.
- Project & WIP Accounting: Lead the monthly Work-In-Progress (WIP) reviews. Analyze project variances, equipment utilization costs, and labor productivity against estimates.
- Reporting & Analytics: Prepare timely, accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the executive team and external stakeholders (banks, bonding companies).
- Cash Flow & Bonding Management: Optimize working capital, manage cash flow forecasting, and maintain strong relationships with our bonding and insurance partners.
- Internal Controls & Compliance: Maintain and improve robust internal control systems. Ensure compliance with local, provincial, and federal tax regulations (including complex corporate structures and joint ventures).
- Team Mentorship: Mentor and develop a small, hard-working accounting and administrative team.
What You Bring
- Designation: CPA designation is highly preferred.
- Experience: 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years in a leadership role (Controller or Assistant Controller) specifically within construction, earthworks, or heavy industrial sectors.
- Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of percentage-of-completion accounting, progress billings, holdbacks, and equipment cost-allocation models.
- Tech Savvy: Advanced proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Quickbooks Online) and expert-level Excel skills.
- Soft Skills: A collaborative, straight-shooting communication style. You can confidently explain financial variances to a Project Superintendent just as easily as you can present to a banker.
