Scope

Are you an exceptional art educator who is passionate about engaging Grade K-7 students?

Surrey Art Gallery is seeking an artist-educator responsible for delivering and developing school education programs at the Gallery. Working with Gallery education staff, this position will develop, research, and deliver engaging inquiry-based education programs for young people: kindergarten to grade seven. In addition, the Artist-Educator shares responsibility for the maintenance of program supplies, studio facility, and equipment. Our ideal candidate will be an engaging presenter with demonstrated pedagogical knowledge and practice in informal learning environments.

This position typically works 18 hours per week on Wednesdays - Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. during the school year. Additional teaching opportunities are available if desired.

Responsibilities

Plan, implement, evaluate, and provide feedback on inquiry-based education programs for exhibitions of contemporary art.
Research, develop, and deliver high quality art education programs.
Develop reference tools and documents such as workshop summaries and Teachers Guides.
Ensure the facility, programs, and equipment are safe and hazard-free.
Monitor the ordering of supplies and track expenditures.
Ensure that City of Surrey policies and procedures are followed in relation to duties.

Required skills include:

Experience facilitating participants with diverse learning needs and styles.
Adept at developing and delivering art programs for young people that integrate complex concepts and themes.
The ability to teach a variety of art media: i.e., drawing, painting, mixed media, and hand-built ceramics.
Well developed classroom management skills and a knowledge of studio art practices.

Qualifications

Grade 12 completion, supplemented by a degree/diploma in a discipline relevant to the specialty from a recognized post-secondary institution.
Two years of progressively responsible experience in the specialty area, or an equivalent acceptable combination of training and experience.
Current Emergency First Aid with CPR C certification.

Conditions of Employment

This position requires completion of a Police Information Check including a Vulnerable Sector.
