The Ottawa-Catholic District School Board (OCSB) is seeking a dedicated Health and Safety Officer to enhance our safety programs and ensure a secure working environment across our schools and administrative offices. Reporting to the Health & Safety Coordinator, this position plays a key role in managing the health and safety programs, conducting inspections and audits, facilitating training and responding to incidents or emergencies.

Job Description:
Plan, develop, implement, and manage health and safety programs ensuring strict compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), WHMIS, WSIB, and other relevant legislation.
Stay current on provincial and federal legislative changes, updating board policies and procedures accordingly.
Conduct regular safety inspections, comprehensive audits, and risk assessments across all OCSB facilities to ensure an optimal environment for staff and students.
Manage, coordinate, schedule, and directly deliver mandatory health and safety training programs, including First Aid/CPR, Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI), and Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) certification.
Support and manage training for specialized departments with unique safety requirements, such as technology shops, gymnasiums, and science labs.
Design and develop new training courses to address evolving legislative requirements and specific board safety needs.
Manage and oversee the Vector Solutions LMS, ensuring accurate training paths and completion tracking for all OCSB staff.
Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses; perform root-cause analysis and recommend actionable corrective actions.
Maintain incident reports, safety logs, and comprehensive records of training and inspections.
Ensure timely follow-up and resolution of safety issues across all board sites.
Oversee the maintenance, routine inspection, and general readiness of emergency safety equipment, including AEDs and first aid kits.
Provide on-the-scene or remote support during emergency incidents, offering technical expertise to ensure effective resolution.
Act as an advisor for staff, principals, and departments regarding health and safety concerns.
Required Qualifications:
Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field
Minimum 3 years of related experience in a similar role, preferably within a large, multi-site, unionized environment
Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) and Standard First Aid/CPR certification
Thorough knowledge of health and safety practices, applicable statutes, and regulations
Demonstrated attention to detail and customer service skills
Proficiency in Google Suite (Gmail, Sheets, Docs) and other relevant software
Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities
Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven ability to work independently and collaboratively
Proven ability to manage conflict, respond to emergency situations, and facilitate resolution of health and safety issues
Candidates must hold a valid driver's license and have access to their own vehicle, as travel to different sites/locations will be required
An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered
In addition, the following will be considered an asset:
The Canadian First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor Certificate
Experience Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
Experience conducting Workplace Violence investigations
Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) designation
Experience with health and safety-specific software
Previous school board experience
This is a full-time permanent position with an annual salary range of $95,098 - $103,153. A comprehensive employee benefits and pension package is provided.
