JOB DESCRIPTION: SHELTER COOK
The shelter cook is responsible for the preparation of meals for residents of the shelter. The cook will ensure that all meals are prepared in accordance with healthy food guidelines and dietary needs of residents. The cook is also responsible for food donation organization, pantry and kitchen management.
Principal Duties:
● Plan, prepare and cook meals and snacks for residents of the shelter
● Develop and implement weekly meal plans following Canadian Food Guide for healthy
eating
● Connect with new residents to understand the dietary needs and preferences of them
and their families
● Provide meals and options that are inclusive and serve the diverse needs of all residents
● Responsible for grocery order support, maintaining food budget and working
with Feed Nova Scotia on donation days
● Maintain inventory of food donations and orders, and ensure proper rotation of food
inventory, disposing of expired foods
● Clean, sanitize & maintain kitchen, pantry, fridge/freezer, food donation room ●
Adhere to public health guidelines with food handling, storage, fridge temperatures,
cooking requirements
Qualifications:
● Food Safety Handling Certificate and working knowledge of Canada Food Guide
● Experience with food preparation, menu planning, cooking for large groups ●
Proven track record of dependability and reliability in an employment setting ●
First Aid&CPR Training, WHMIS, health& safety training an asset
● Knowledge of intimate partner violence and its effects on individuals and families
Hours of Work: 24 hours weekly
