Experienced Family Law & Litigation Legal Assistant — Edmonton, Alberta
Prowse Barrette LLP
Overview
At Prowse Barrette LLP, we believe a law firm should be more than just a place to work — it should be a place where talented people feel supported, valued, and able to do their best work. Our team lives our core values every day: embracing challenges, being creative, nurturing curiosity, and looking after each other.
We are an established and growing mid-sized firm in downtown Edmonton. As our Family Law and Litigation practices continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced Legal Assistant to join our team. This role will support multiple lawyers and work closely with other Family Law Legal Assistants to help ensure active files move forward efficiently, accurately, and with exceptional client service.
This is not an entry-level position. We are looking for someone with recent Family Law Legal Assistant experience gained through employment within a Canadian law firm environment — someone who understands the pace, confidentiality, and practical expectations of supporting active Family Law and litigation files.
The successful candidate will be comfortable supporting clients through complex and often sensitive Family Law matters and will bring professionalism, discretion, sound judgment, empathy, and strong emotional intelligence to their work.
We offer competitive salaries, a supportive team environment, and cover the cost of a monthly transit pass for employees who use public transportation, with bus and LRT access right outside our building.
Key Responsibilities
· Support multiple lawyers within a growing Family Law and Litigation team while working collaboratively with other legal assistants and administrative staff.
· Manage active Family Law and litigation files from file opening through completion.
· Prepare, draft, revise, proofread, organize, and file correspondence, pleadings, court forms, affidavits, disclosure materials, and other legal documents.
· Coordinate court filings through Justice Digital, email filing, and other filing processes.
· Manage court dates, hearings, appointments, limitation dates, reminders, and lawyer calendars.
· Maintain file progression by identifying outstanding items, anticipating next steps, and ensuring follow-up tasks are completed in a timely manner.
· Communicate professionally with clients, opposing counsel, court staff, process servers, experts, and third parties.
· Coordinate service of documents, scheduling activities, and supporting materials required for meetings, hearings, and court attendances.
· Complete conflict searches, file openings, database maintenance, and other file management procedures.
· Maintain strict confidentiality, professionalism, discretion, and client-focused service.
· Use and maintain practice management tools, including CLIO, and adapt to evolving technology and workflow improvements.
Required Qualifications
· Minimum 2 years of recent Family Law Legal Assistant experience gained through employment within a Canadian law firm environment.
· Demonstrated experience supporting Family Law files from intake through resolution, including ongoing file management and follow-up.
· Experience preparing, drafting, proofreading, organizing, and filing Family Law documents and court materials.
· Experience with Alberta Family Law procedures, Justice Digital, and electronic filing.
· Experience managing deadlines, scheduling, client communication, file progression, and competing priorities within a busy legal practice.
· Strong MS Office skills and confidence working with legal technology and practice management software.
· Exceptional organizational, workflow management, client service, and communication skills.
· High emotional intelligence, professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.
· Ability to work independently, anticipate next steps, and support lawyers with minimal prompting.
The Ideal Candidate
· Is proactive, highly organized, and takes ownership of keeping files moving forward.

· Is comfortable supporting clients through sensitive and often complex Family Law matters.
· Communicates clearly, calmly, and professionally with lawyers, clients, courts, and opposing counsel.
· Is comfortable using CLIO and other legal technology and is adaptable to evolving systems, processes, and workflow improvements.
· Brings a practical, solutions-focused approach and understands the importance of accuracy, discretion, and follow-through.
