Knox United Church is an active and evolving congregation investing in its future. We are creating a 9-month contract position to provide essential operational support for our ministry, with the possibility of extension and long-term growth as the role evolves and funding becomes available.
About Knox United Church
Knox United Church is a growing centre for spirituality, justice, community, and the arts in downtown Calgary. Alongside worship and pastoral care, Knox hosts arts programming, community partnerships, facility rentals, social justice initiatives, grant-funded projects, and social enterprise activities.
Position Summary
The Director of Operations is a senior half-time leadership role responsible for coordinating operational systems, supervising designated staff, supporting organizational accountability, and helping Knox United Church achieve its mission and strategic priorities.
This role focuses on leadership, coordination, and oversight rather than personally carrying out all administrative, facilities, financial, communications, or project-related tasks.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Support organizational planning and implementation of Council-approved priorities.
- Develop and improve operational systems, policies, and workflows.
- Identify operational challenges and recommend solutions.
- Provide regular operational updates to leadership.
Staff Supervision and Human Resources
- Supervise designated operational staff and contractors.
- Support staff development, accountability, and performance management.
- Work with Ministry and Personnel on recruitment, onboarding, training, and workplace policies.
Administration and Facilities Oversight
- Support office, facility, rental, and administrative operations.
- Ensure effective systems for records, contracts, building use, safety, and accessibility.
- Coordinate with staff, Trustees, contractors, and volunteers on operational priorities.
Financial and Resource Coordination
- Support budgeting, financial accountability, fundraising, grants, rentals, and other revenue generating initiatives.
- Assist with project planning, reporting, and organizational sustainability.
Projects, Volunteers, and Partnerships
- Coordinate approved projects, grants, partnerships, and volunteer systems.
- Support communications workflows and community engagement initiatives.
- Oversee operations and development of Kay’s Thrift Store.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will bring:
- Experience in operations, administration, nonprofit leadership, business management, faith based organizations, arts administration, or a related field.
- Experience supervising staff, volunteers, contractors, or project teams.
- Strong organizational, project management, and communication skills.
- Experience with budgeting, grants, fundraising, or resource development.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a complex and growing organization.
- Alignment with Knox United Church’s identity as an Affirming, inclusive, justice-oriented, and community-engaged congregation.
