Job description:
We are seeking an experienced Shop Lead Hand / Heavy Equipment Tech to lead and coordinate shop operations while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, efficiency, and professionalism. This role is hands-on and leadership-focused, responsible for guiding the shop team, managing workflow, and ensuring work is completed accurately, on time, and within target margins.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee daily shop operations and workflow
- Evaluate, manage, and support shop team members
- Assign, manage, and track shop floor work orders and projects to meet time and efficiency goals
- Ensure quality of workmanship meets company and industry standards
- Provide consistent leadership, training, and mentorship to apprentices to support skill development and independence
- Communicate effectively with management to identify solutions and provide repair direction
- Maintain professional and timely communication with customers and upper management
- Manage team performance to ensure tasks are completed fully, accurately, and within agreed timelines
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and safety standards
- Maintain target margins on work orders and projects
- Adapt priorities to shifting urgencies while maintaining productivity and quality
Qualifications
- Valid HET (Heavy Equipment Technician) certification
- Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with truck and trailer service and repair
- Well-rounded troubleshooting and diagnostic experience including, hydraulic and electrical systems
- Proven leadership or lead-hand/foreman experience in a shop environment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking abilities
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Adaptable, accountable, and takes ownership of responsibilities
