Job Title: Insulator
Job Description
This role focuses on installing, removing, and repairing thermal and acoustical insulation on a wide range of industrial equipment within a large marine shipbuilding project. You will work primarily inside ships on long-term, high-profile contracts, contributing to the construction of complex vessels such as joint support ships and icebreakers.
Responsibilities
-
Apply, remove, and repair thermal and acoustical insulation, including materials such as calcium silicate, glass foam, mineral wool, fiberglass, and similar products on industrial equipment such as duct piping, heat exchangers, tanks, and vessels.
-
Read and interpret drawings and specifications to determine insulation requirements, ensuring all work aligns with project plans and standards.
-
Select the appropriate type and amount of insulation to be installed, as well as the correct method of securing the insulation (such as pin welding, wiring, banding, or taping) based on the type and shape of the surface, operating temperature, location (indoor or outdoor), and the intended use of the equipment.
-
Measure and cut insulating materials and coverings to the required shapes and dimensions, ensuring accurate fit and finish.
-
Fit insulation around obstructions and shape insulation materials and protective coverings to accommodate complex geometries and tight spaces.
-
Install vapour barriers to protect insulated systems and ensure long-term performance.
-
Finish insulated surfaces by applying appropriate protective coverings such as metal cladding, canvas, PVC, or cement.
-
Operate hand and power tools safely and effectively to complete insulation tasks and related activities.
-
Collaborate with supervisors, forepersons, and other trades on site to coordinate work and maintain project timelines.
-
Follow all site safety procedures, training requirements, and security protocols while working in a marine shipyard environment.
-
Support occasional weekend overtime work as required by project schedules.
Essential Skills

Registered insulation apprentice or journeyperson (JMAN) status.
-
Ability to operate hand and power tools safely and efficiently.

-
Strong English communication skills for effective coordination on a busy job site.
-
Canadian citizenship is an asset for meeting certain security requirements.
-
Familiarity with working on large-scale, complex projects such as shipbuilding or industrial facilities.
Why Work Here?
You will join a long-term project with multi-year and even multi-decade contracts, offering stable work and the opportunity to grow your career through apprenticeship and ongoing development. After an initial period, you will become eligible for union membership, gaining access to union wages, comprehensive benefits, and a pension that can significantly enhance your total compensation. You will work on unique, technically challenging projects such as military ships and specialized vessels, building skills that are highly valued in the industry and contributing to projects of national importance.
Work Environment
This position is based at a major shipyard in North Vancouver, working inside and around large vessels under construction, including joint support ships and a polar icebreaker. The site typically has around 120 team members on the project, creating a dynamic, collaborative environment with multiple supervisors and forepersons supporting day-to-day operations.
