Energy and Environmental Technician

JOB OVERVIEW:

This position will ensure Board compliance with environmental regulations and industry best practices. Lead energy and sustainability programs that promote student and staff well-being while serving as a technical expert for risk mitigation and utility data. Action and monitor the Asbestos Management Control Plan, the management of designated substances under the OHSA, Environmental Emergency Regulations, and deliver safety training to maintain a healthy, efficient workplace.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitor and ensure Board compliance with environmental laws and Ministry standards (e.g., O. Reg 170/03, E2 Regulations). Act as the primary liaison for external agencies like the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks and Local Health Units.
Lead the Asbestos Management Control Plan and designated substance programs. Coordinate removals, generate compliance reports, and manage emergency response plans for spills or hazardous disturbances to mitigate Board liability.
Manage district-wide water, wastewater, and energy systems. Utilize Building Automation Systems (BAS) to track usage, identify energy losses, and implement reduction strategies to improve sustainability.
Assist the Energy and Environmental Sustainability Coordinator in developing environmental policies, conducting feasibility studies, and managing budgets to identify cost-saving opportunities and funding for green initiatives.
Provide expert specifications for the procurement of energy-efficient equipment and sustainable supplies. Advise the Purchasing and Facility Services departments on eco-friendly custodial operations and responsible waste disposal.
Conduct environmental audits, investigations, and testing in response to concerns or complaints. Recommend and implement corrective actions to eliminate environmental hazards across district facilities.
Develop and deliver technical training and orientation for Board staff on environmental legislation, safe work practices, and the operation of specialized utility systems.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum completion of a two (2) year post secondary diploma in Environmental Studies, Engineering, or a related discipline.

Minimum two (2) years of relevant work experience, preferably within a public sector environment.

Certified under O Reg 170/03: Drinking Water Systems an asset.

Demonstrated ability to communicate both in writing and verbally to technical and non-technical audiences.

Comprehensive knowledge of energy conservation measures, climate change

mitigation policies, and modern sustainable practices to support the Board’s carbon reduction goals.

Understanding of Ontario Building Codes, Ontario Fire Codes, Occupational Health and Safety Act and Municipal by-laws.

Knowledge of Environmental Emergency Regulations, (E2 Regulations).

Must possess a valid Ontario Class ‘G’ Driver’s License and have consistent access to a reliable vehicle to meet the multi-location demands of this position.

Satisfactory Criminal and Judicial Background Check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Exposure to hazardous materials and conditions on a regular basis.

Perform on call duties for emergency situations. Assess the urgency of repairs required, notify appropriate personnel and co-ordinate repairs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Lifting up to 20lbs. Body mobility including: bending, squatting, rotating, kneeling, walking, sitting on a regular basis.

Required to work in environments with potential exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, fumes, or dust.
