The Alberta Vulnerable Infant Response Team Public Health Nurse (AVIRT PHN) works in partnership with a specialized multidisciplinary team that includes Children’s Services and the Edmonton Police Services. The goal of the AVIRT program is to reduce risks to infants (0 – 3 months) deemed endangered under the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act. In collaboration with team partners, the AVIRT PHN will be part of a specialized approach to provide comprehensive assessment, risk mitigation, safety, planning and parenting support. The AVIRT PHN provides expert infant and maternal assessment skills and clinical judgment to support care, short term follow-up, referral, linkage, advocacy, consultation, and teaching in the patient’s home or in a clinic/office setting. This position requires the ability to carry up to 25 lbs. of equipment; pack, push, pull, and transport heavy and/or awkward supplies; walk 3-4 blocks, climb 3-4 flights of stairs to deliver services; carry out awkward and repetitive movements for an entire 9.75-hour shift, including sitting, standing, and/or bending for long periods of time. This position requires compliance with appropriate hand hygiene techniques, including regular use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer and antibacterial soap.
As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of PCA. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit holders will be paid $40.76 to $55.79 per hour. Upon obtaining a full practice permit, the rate of pay will be adjusted to the applicable Registered Nurse rate in accordance with UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii), as applicable.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). Additional Required Qualifications:
Minimum of 2-3 years of current experience with the Healthy Beginnings Postpartum program. Knowledge, understanding and demonstrated use of the determinants of health. Experience working with teens, young adults, diverse communities, young families, low-income families and other vulnerable or marginalized populations. Ability to be self-directed and to exercise independent nursing judgement. Strong clinical, analytical, critical thinking and decision-making skills. Strong written, oral communication and interpersonal skills. Experience in multidisciplinary teamwork. Ability to adapt in a constantly changing work environment. A valid Alberta driver’s license, vehicle and business insurance are required. Recent experience (within the past two years) using computer technology and applications including website navigation, office or business applications, health database use (Netcare, Meditech, Connect Care), and MS Office. Documentation is to be done at point of care into the electronic medical record, as per CRNA guidelines.
Preferred Qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree in nursing preferred; however, skills and experience relevant to nursing practice in the community sector will be considered. Experience in working with patients experiencing addictions and mental health challenges. Canadian Nurses Association Certification in Community Health Nursing. International Board of Lactation Consultants certification.
