Purpose: To perform accurate CNC lathe setups, conduct first-part inspections, and troubleshoot machining issues to ensure smooth and efficient production during the evening shift. The operator is responsible for reducing downtime by optimizing setups, adjusting tools, and maintaining precision throughout the production process, often working with limited on-site support.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set up and operate Tornos Swiss-type CNC lathes (DT26, DT32, GT-32-6) and the DMG MORI NLX turning center as per setup instructions, with the majority of work focused on Swiss-type machines.
- Load, verify, and set up tools/inserts as defined by the programmer, ensuring correct tool lengths and offsets, including guide bushing setup and adjustment on Swiss machines.
- Prepare raw materials per planner instructions, including cutting material using a saw.
- Load raw material into the bar feeder, accurately establish work shifts, and adjust tool offsets for precision.
- Conduct first-part and in-process inspections using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, gauge pins, optical comparator).
- Troubleshoot machine issues such as tool wear, chip buildup, guide bushing fit, and alarm codes, making necessary adjustments to prevent interruptions.
- Work independently to keep multiple machines running through the evening, escalating to programmers and engineers as needed.
- Collaborate with programmers and engineers to resolve machining issues and suggest process improvements.
- Continuously optimize setups to reduce cycle times and improve production efficiency.
- Accurately enter inspection and workflow data into ERP for tracking and documentation.
- Log working hours and time tracking for work orders in ERP.
- Assist with deburring, cleaning, packaging, and labeling finished parts.
- Maintain proper lubrication and coolant/cutting oil levels, performing basic maintenance as needed.
- Ensure quality and efficiency targets are consistently met.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Minimum 3 years of Swiss-type CNC lathe setup experience required (Tornos experience strongly preferred); turning center experience an asset.
- Aerospace or high-precision machining background strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in reading engineering drawings and GD&T.
- Strong knowledge of CNC tooling, offsets, guide bushings, and troubleshooting techniques.
- Ability to work with tight tolerances and ensure precision machining.
- Skilled in the use of precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, gauges).
- Self-directed and reliable, with the ability to run a shift with minimal supervision.
- Experience working with an ERP (an asset but not required).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to optimize machining processes.
