This position resides in the Ministry of Hospital and Surgical Health Services under the Acute Care Division, within the Access to Care, Performance, and Quality Branch.
The Hospital Policy and Standards Unit is a high-performing, demanding, fast-paced work environment, dedicated to developing and supporting strategies, policies, and legislation underpinning Alberta's acute care system. Working with major health system stakeholders, the unit aligns provincial acute care delivery with government priorities and strategic directions. Work in the unit is focused on improving patient flow within acute care facilities, improving wait times, and analyzing system capacity-related data (e.g., length of stay, hospital readmission rates, alternative level of care rates).
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Manager, Standards, this position provides clinical and operational expertise on initiatives that improve Albertans' access to provincial acute care services. The successful candidate will blend clinical expertise with policy analysis to provide high quality and timely advice on a range of topics related to acute care.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Knowledge and Technical Advice:
- Provide subject matter expertise and consultation to support program development, policy implementation, and organizational decision-making.
- Provide expert policy interpretation and advice on legislation, regulations, standards, and government priorities related to the acute care system.
- Develop, review, and update administrative forms and supporting manuals/materials.
- Maintain competent in professional practice.
Policy Development:
- Lead the research, analysis, development, and implementation of policies, strategies, and initiatives that support acute care priorities and organizational business plan objectives.
- Develop policy frameworks and provide strategic recommendations and advice to support health system capacity planning, service delivery improvements, and access to care initiatives.
- Conduct environmental scans, literature reviews, jurisdictional analyses, and evidence-based research to inform policy recommendations and decision-making.
- Prepare and review briefing notes, reports, presentations, correspondence, and executive materials for senior leadership, including the Assistant Deputy Minister, Deputy Minister and Minister.
- Support the development and delivery of effective communication strategies and public information materials related to acute care initiatives.
- Monitor and evaluate emerging healthcare trends, innovations, and best practices in Canada and internationally to identify opportunities for system improvement.
- Identify and analyze performance measures and indicators, health outcomes, and operational data to inform policy development, program evaluation, and strategic planning.
- Manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality work within tight timelines in a dynamic and evolving environment.
Relationship Management:
- Build and sustain strategic networks with internal and external stakeholders, and collaborate to advance provincial wait time reduction strategies, treatment improvements, and other acute care initiatives.
- Participate in policy working groups, committees, forums, and cross-functional initiatives to support health system priorities.
- Represent the branch, division, or ministry on cross-government committees, projects, and stakeholder engagement activities.
- Engage executive and staff in business/operational planning, progress monitoring and evaluation, and communications.

Education and Experience:
A university degree related to the position assignment (Nursing, Medical, Regulated. Health Provider) and four (4) years of related experience. Must be a regulated member of the appropriate college if required by the Health Professions Act.
Equivalency: Diploma related to the position assignment and six (6) years of related experience. Must be a regulated member of the appropriate college if required by the Health Professions Act.
Master’s degree related to the position assignment and three (3) years of related experience. Must be a regulated member of the appropriate college if required by the Health Professions Act.
Assets: Experience in critical care settings is considered an asset.
