Position Overview
The Accountant, under the direction of the Controller, will primarily be responsible for ensuring the integrity of accounting information by recording, verifying, reconciling transactions, and resolving discrepancies. This role will play a key part in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our cash and disbursement processes, with primary responsibility for bank reconciliations and payment batch review. This role will prepare financial results reports for the management team and ensure corporate compliance with all federal and provincial requirements, aid in the auditing function, and support junior accountants and support staff. The Accountant will ensure the organization utilizes ethical accounting practices and standards.
The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of internal controls, and the ability to manage high transaction volumes while maintaining accuracy and compliance.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform daily and monthly bank reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and completeness of cash balances.
- Investigate and resolve reconciling items in a timely manner, working with internal teams and external banking partners.
- Review and approve payment batches to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper authorization.
- Verify supporting documentation and compliance with company policies and internal control frameworks.
- Prepare and file HST/GST returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance with applicable tax regulations.
- Investigate variances and provide variance analytics to management compared to budgets and prior year financial results.
- Ensure completeness, timeliness and accuracy of journal entries posted in the General Ledger and prepare or review account reconciliations.
- Support the month-end close process, ensuring deadlines are met and financial results are accurate and complete
- Provide support to Controller to perform financial analysis requests
- Assist with support for external audits and ensure effective resolution and swift closure of audit requests
- Coordinate activities by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and delegating work accordingly.
- Develop efficiency in the accounting departments processes on an on-going basis; assist in the development and maintenance of accounting files.
Qualifications:
- Degree or an advanced degree in business administration, management, finance, accounting, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of relevant accounting experience, including preparation of financial reports, preparation of working papers and general ledger experience.
- CPA designation or CPA enrolment is an asset.
- Demonstrated knowledge of accepted accounting rules, practices, tax laws, and reporting requirements.
- Advanced proficiency with accounting software and spreadsheet programs and applications.
- Knowledge of standard office procedures and practices.
- Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret goals, objectives, and policies.
- Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
- Ability to excel in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills with a strong attention to detail.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, confidence and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization and with external clients.
- Proficiency with Microsoft applications including MS Excel, Word and Outlook is required.
