Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Auto Wreckers Manager with a proven track record in management positions within the Canadian auto-recycling, salvage, or auto-wrecking industry.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall management and profitability of the operation, including vehicle purchasing, parts sales, dismantling, inventory control, scrap processing, budgeting, equipment management, marketing, and team leadership.
This is a dynamic leadership role requiring strong commercial judgment, detailed knowledge of automotive parts, and the ability to manage day-to-day yard operations while developing long-term business growth strategies.
Key ResponsibilitiesOperations Management
- Manage the daily operations of the auto-wrecking and recycling facility.
- Coordinate vehicle intake, depollution, dismantling, parts harvesting, inventory storage, scrap processing, and final vehicle disposal.
- Establish efficient workflows for dismantlers, yard personnel, sales staff, marketing employees, equipment operators, and scrap-processing teams.
- Ensure vehicles are processed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with company procedures and applicable Canadian environmental and workplace regulations.
- Maintain high standards of yard organization, cleanliness, security, productivity, and operational discipline.
- Identify operational bottlenecks and implement practical improvements to increase throughput and profitability.
Vehicle Purchasing and Online Auctions
- Attend and actively participate in online and in-person vehicle auctions.
- Review vehicle condition reports, photographs, damage assessments, repair estimates, mileage, title status, and historical sales information.
- Recommend vehicles for purchase based on projected parts demand, expected recovery value, scrap value, acquisition cost, transportation expenses, and anticipated profit margins.
- Establish maximum purchase prices and bidding limits for each vehicle.
- Monitor auction platforms, insurance salvage channels, dealer sources, fleet disposals, private sellers, and other vehicle-acquisition opportunities.
- Maintain accurate purchasing records and evaluate the financial performance of acquired vehicles.
Parts Sales and Inventory Management
- Lead the sales of used automotive parts through telephone, walk-in, wholesale, online, and business-to-business channels.
- Maintain detailed knowledge of vehicle makes, models, years, trim levels, interchangeable components, part numbers, and market values.
- Establish competitive pricing for engines, transmissions, body panels, mechanical components, electrical parts, wheels, tires, interior components, and other reusable parts.
- Ensure dismantled parts are properly identified, inspected, graded, photographed, labelled, entered into inventory, stored, and made available for sale.
- Monitor inventory age, sales velocity, gross margins, returns, warranties, and obsolete stock.
- Develop procedures to improve inventory accuracy and reduce lost, damaged, duplicated, or incorrectly identified parts.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with repair shops, dealerships, body shops, exporters, wholesalers, retail customers, and other industry buyers.
Market Intelligence
- Maintain current market intelligence regarding demand and supply for vehicles, used parts, scrap metals, catalytic converters, cores, tires, batteries, and recyclable materials.
- Analyze customer inquiries, sales history, competitor pricing, auction activity, seasonal trends, regional demand, and inventory shortages.
- Identify high-demand vehicles and parts that should be prioritized for purchasing.
- Monitor changes in market values and recommend adjustments to purchasing, inventory, pricing, and sales strategies.
- Provide management with regular reports on market conditions, purchasing opportunities, sales trends, inventory performance, and competitive activity.
Team Leadership
- Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate dismantlers, sales representatives, marketing staff, yard employees, scrap-processing personnel, and equipment operators.
- Set clear productivity, sales, safety, quality, and customer-service expectations.
- Conduct regular team meetings and communicate daily priorities.
- Assign responsibilities and ensure accountability across all departments.
- Coach employees, resolve workplace issues, and address performance concerns promptly and professionally.
- Create a results-oriented culture focused on safety, teamwork, productivity, customer service, and profitability.
- Ensure employees receive appropriate training for their duties, tools, machinery, and equipment.
Sales and Marketing Leadership
- Develop and implement sales strategies to increase parts turnover, customer retention, and market reach.
- Establish sales targets and monitor individual and departmental performance.
- Support marketing initiatives across online marketplaces, industry platforms, social media, search advertising, email campaigns, and direct business development.
- Ensure online listings contain accurate descriptions, pricing, compatibility information, photographs, and inventory availability.
- Review customer feedback, returns, complaints, and warranty claims to improve service quality.
- Identify new wholesale, export, fleet, repair-shop, dealership, and insurance-industry opportunities.
Scrap and Recycling Operations
- Oversee the sorting, preparation, storage, weighing, sale, and shipment of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
- Monitor scrap-metal prices and negotiate with processors, recyclers, transportation companies, and commodity buyers.
- Ensure fluids, batteries, tires, fuel, oils, refrigerants, mercury switches, and other regulated materials are handled and stored appropriately.
- Implement controls to reduce material loss, theft, contamination, and inaccurate weights.
- Track scrap recovery, commodity revenue, transportation costs, and processing margins.
- Ensure accurate documentation for all outbound scrap and recyclable materials.
Budgeting and Financial Management
- Prepare and manage operating budgets, purchasing budgets, payroll costs, capital expenditures, maintenance expenses, marketing budgets, and revenue forecasts.
- Establish financial targets for vehicle acquisitions, parts sales, scrap recovery, gross margins, operating costs, and overall profitability.
- Review financial and operational performance against budget.
- Identify cost overruns, margin reductions, revenue shortfalls, and operational inefficiencies.
- Recommend corrective actions and cost-control measures.
- Review major purchases, vendor agreements, equipment repairs, transportation expenses, and facility improvements.
- Produce regular management reports covering sales, purchasing, inventory, labour, scrap revenue, expenses, and profitability.
Equipment and Facility Management
The manager must have practical knowledge of equipment commonly used in auto-wrecking and scrap-yard operations, including:
- Forklifts and telehandlers
- Wheel loaders and skid-steer loaders
- Excavators and material handlers
- Grapples and hydraulic attachments
- Vehicle lifts and hoists
- Car crushers, balers, and compactors
- Shears and cutting equipment
- Tow trucks and transport vehicles
- Fluid-drainage and depollution systems
- Refrigerant-recovery equipment
- Tire-removal and wheel-handling equipment
- Scales and weighing systems
- Air compressors and pneumatic tools

The manager will:
- Ensure equipment is operated safely and only by qualified personnel.
- Establish preventive-maintenance and inspection schedules.
- Coordinate equipment servicing, repairs, certifications, and replacement planning.
- Monitor fuel use, downtime, repair costs, and equipment productivity.
- Evaluate and recommend equipment purchases based on operational requirements and financial return.
- Ensure the facility, buildings, fencing, lighting, surveillance systems, storage areas, and traffic routes are properly maintained.
Health, Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory Compliance
- Promote a strong workplace health-and-safety culture.
- Ensure employees follow required personal protective equipment, lockout, lifting, cutting, equipment-operation, and material-handling procedures.
- Conduct workplace inspections and address hazards promptly.
- Maintain required records relating to incidents, training, equipment inspections, hazardous materials, and environmental procedures.
- Support compliance with applicable municipal, provincial, and federal requirements.
- Cooperate with regulators, inspectors, auditors, insurers, and other authorities when required.
- Investigate workplace incidents and implement corrective actions.
Required Qualifications
- Proven management experience within the Canadian auto-wrecking, salvage, auto-recycling, scrap, or used-parts industry.
- Strong knowledge of automotive parts, vehicle systems, interchangeability, dismantling processes, and used-parts valuation.
- Demonstrated experience purchasing salvage vehicles through online or in-person auctions.
- Proven ability to manage dismantling, parts sales, inventory, marketing, scrap processing, and yard operations.
- Strong understanding of market demand, supply conditions, competitor pricing, and commodity values.
- Experience preparing budgets, forecasts, purchasing plans, performance reports, and cost-control measures.
- Practical knowledge of scrap-yard machinery, tools, vehicles, and material-handling equipment.
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple operational priorities.
- Strong computer skills, including inventory systems, sales platforms, auction systems, spreadsheets, and management-reporting tools.
- Valid Canadian driver’s licence and the ability to travel to auctions, supplier locations, customer sites, and industry events when required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Established relationships within the Canadian automotive recycling, repair, insurance, auction, export, or scrap industries.
- Knowledge of parts-interchange systems and automotive inventory-management software.
- Experience with e-commerce and online used-parts sales.
- Experience negotiating with scrap processors, recyclers, transport providers, auction companies, and automotive suppliers.
- Relevant equipment-operation certifications, health-and-safety training, or environmental-compliance training.
- Experience managing a profit-and-loss statement for an auto-recycling or scrap-yard operation.
