KCDSB Invites applications for a 1.0 FTE (Full Time Equivalent) Long Term Occasional (LTO) position:
Early Childhood Educator (ECE)
Start Date: August 31, 2026
End Date: June 25, 2027
Location: St. John School, Red Lake
Salary Range: $26.79 - $34.31 per hour
Role Overview:
The Early Childhood Educator (ECE) will partner with the classroom teacher to plan and implement a full day Early Learning Program within a Catholic classroom setting. He or she will also provide supervision and age-appropriate Catholic programming for groups of students as part of the extended day program as required. The ECE will collaborate in the design of programs and environments which will enhance and support the children's cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and faith development.
Responsibilities:
- Implement and plan developmentally appropriate activities to build skills in literacy, numeracy, and cognition through large and small group activities as outlined in The Full-Day Early Learning- Kindergarten Program (2010) curriculum document.
- Plan and provide Catholic education to address students' specific identified needs, stages of development and interests and support faith initiatives.
- Maintain a healthy and safe physical, emotional, and social learning environment.
- Ensure confidentiality of privileged information.
- Maintain all appropriate records for students.
- Interact with parents providing an on-going parent information exchange.
- Keep principal abreast of all issues.
- Liaise with Teachers and Educational Assistants.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Participate/supervise in prayer services/mass, and other school and faith functions.
- Perform additional general student supervision duties as assigned by Principal.
Qualifications:
- Completion of a community college diploma in Early Childhood Education
- Current valid registration with the College of Early Childhood Educators is required.
- Basic knowledge of Ministry of Education full day early learning program and related legislation
- Minimum of one year of related experience in a childcare or educational setting
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written with the ability to communicate in a sensitive, courteous manner with children, parents, staff and the general public
- Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
- Basic computer skills
- Effective problem solving, critical thinking and decision making skills
- Excellent discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to conduct oneself professionally while acting as a role model, promoting the Christian formation of our youth.
As a LTO ECE, you work during the school year only. There will be school shut down periods in December (Christmas Break), March Break and during the summer months when ECE's do not work and are therefore, not paid.
The Board shall undertake to hire an employee with appropriate post-secondary education, training and/or directly related experience. Suggested appropriate qualifications may include but are not limited to:
- Child and Youth Worker/Child and Youth Care
- Community and Justice
- Developmental Disabilities Worker
- Educational Assistant/Educational Support
- Early Childhood Education (with special needs experience)
- Bachelor of Arts- Child and Youth Care
- Bachelor of Arts- Psychology
- Registered Nurse
Candidates must also be able to perform the essential physical duties of the position to support our children with special needs, which may also include toileting, lifting, transferring and personal care.
