Our business:
Ontario Flora is a social enterprise that offers a native plant nursery, landscape design, environmental restoration. We bring people and nature together. We support and create community greening initiatives with wild plants. Our native plant nursery is located in Grey-Bruce north of Toronto. Our work can be throughout Southern Ontario.
Position Responsibilities:
- In spring, potting up, splitting, plants, organizing and preparing plants for sale, moving plants from or to greenhouse, preparation for shipping plants to retailers or for customer pick ups, come mid May
- Although some candidates may be just beginning to learn native plants, we are looking for assistants who are eager to learn horticulture, and are interested to learn the basics of native plant horticulture
- We will work on native plant based landscape design projects, so, later spring, the candidate will help in garden areas and ecosystem restoration sites, residential gardens, and commercial and institutional locations as needed
- If landscape drafting is your skill you want to hone, if you have AutoCAD experience, we are able to offer job opportunities such as this to candidates, depending on individual skills and interests
- Later summer assistance in collecting seed, drying and stratifying seed for nursery propagation
- Some planting installations may include the occasional short term out of Grey-Bruce projects, travel time paid and transportation provided
Qualifications and Experience:
- A candidate who is gaining skills in the following disciplines in school or in equivalent job experience is an asset but not required (Landscape Design, Architecture, Horticultural, Biology, Environmental Studies or Science, Agriculture, Landscaping, Gardening maintenance)
- Reliability, decision making and time management are needed
- No ‘hardscape’ construction is needed for the position however the ability to lift heavier landscape objects over 40 pounds is required
- Prior experience, familiarity, and interest in physical jobs outdoors in a variety of temperatures and weather is required
- Steel toe boots are required, some subsidy for purchase is given
Eligibility requirements:
Our funding from natural environment grants are to hire specifically BIPOC youth under 30, for this position. This means those who are Black, Indigenous, People of Colour. We are helping to remove systemic barriers to employment for these groups this year, by creating opportunities for racialized youth in our nursery.
For this position, the following applies:
- Under 30 years of age
- Black, Indigenous, a person of colour
- A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been granted
- Have a valid Social Insurance Number, be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
- Have their own accommodation in the area (live in commuting distance, with their own transportation to work)
Job Type and Duration:
Part-time seasonal now until August 20th, with possibility for employees to continue working until beginning of November, as their time allows.
Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 16 hours minimum, with flexibility for more hours if negotiated through contract on an as per project basis.
Salary: Based on relevant experience and qualifications: $18.00
