SUMS Place Society is a christian faith-based nonprofit organization dedicated to serving individuals experiencing homelessness, poverty, food insecurity, and complex social challenges in Surrey. Through food distribution, housing support, outreach, and community programs, SUMS Place works to restore hope, dignity, and stability to those in need.
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate summer student to provide support to recreation and wellness programming at SUMS locations and off site.The Recreation Assistant supports the planning, coordination, and delivery of recreational, social, and wellness activities for clients. This role helps create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment that encourages client participation, connection, and overall well-being. The Recreation Assistant works collaboratively with program staff to organize activities, prepare materials, support client engagement, and assist with special events, outreach activities, and other program initiatives as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with planning and facilitating recreational activities, workshops, and group programs.
- Set up, organize, and clean activity spaces and materials.
- Engage and encourage client participation in a respectful, supportive manner.
- Help coordinate outings and on-site events.
- Monitor activities to ensure safety and positive participation.
- Record basic attendance or program notes as required.
- Work collaboratively with program staff and follow all safety guidelines.
Qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution or recently graduated.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Compassionate and respectful attitude towards vulnerable populations.
- Familiarity with general office procedures and computer applications.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Ability to engage respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
- First Aid, Food Safe, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, or related training is an asset.
Schedule: Monday-Friday 8am-3pm
The summer student internship is a temporary position for 8 weeks and requires applicants to meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Below 30 years of age at the start of the employment
- Have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations
Note: This position may involve interacting with individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health issues, or substance use challenges. Sensitivity and non-judgmental attitudes are essential for successful engagement.This position is also subject to a vulnerable sector criminal record check .
