Sharon Museum and Gardens (formerly the Sharon Temple National Historic Site & Museum) is an open-air museum dedicated to telling the story of the Children of Peace, the Sharon Temple, and the history of the community of East Gwillimbury. First established in 1918 as the Sharon Temple Museum, it is one of the oldest museums in Canada. The Museum is home to nine heritage buildings, including the Sharon Temple National Historic Site, as well as a diverse array of vegetable and flower gardens. The museum site is located in the heart of East Gwillimbury on 7 acres and is the cultural hub of the community, welcoming over 18,000 visitors each year. It is owned and operated by the Sharon Temple Museum Society (STMS).
Position Overview:
Sharon Museum and Gardens is seeking motivated and enthusiastic Volunteer Summer Camp Counsellors to join our team. This is a great opportunity for high school students looking to complete volunteer/community service hours, gain hands-on experience working with children, and build skills in a camp environment. Flexible scheduling available: Volunteers can commit to as many hours as they would like during the camp week. Camp runs Monday-Friday, 9AM - 5PM.
Each summer, we offer six weeks of themed summer camps that strive to provide a positive, educational, and rewarding experience for all campers. We currently have 3 weeks of summer camp left. The last day of summer camp is August 14th.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in recreation and education and enjoy working with children in a camp environment. The ideal candidate will be able to help supervise children and maintain an energetic, welcoming, and positive attitude. They will be creative and organized, which will contribute to a successful summer of camp programming. They will also have excellent customer service skills.
Under the supervision of the Programming & Collections Manager and the Summer Camp Lead, the Volunteer Camp Counsellor will support the planning, implementation, and delivery of summer camp activities and logistics.
Primary Volunteer Functions:
- Assist with the preparation of camp programs for ages 6-12 around themes such as nature, history, geography, and physical activity.
- Help implement daily camp programming, delivering structured activities such as games and crafts.
- Work collaboratively with camp staff and other volunteers to help provide a welcoming and safe camp environment.
- Support the Camp Lead in maintaining an organized plan for children and staff to follow.
- Assist with tracking attendance and camper information.
- Maintain positive communication with campers, parents, staff, and partnering groups.
- Report to the Camp Lead as their direct supervisor.
General Duties:
- Support event implementation and program preparation as needed.
- Assist staff with daily attendance tracking and other light administrative tasks.
- Provide support as needed for other staff members.
- Other tasks as required.
What You'll Gain:

Qualifications:
- Interest in working with children in a camp/recreational setting.
- Interest in the fields of Education, Recreation, or Leisure an asset.
- Ability to handle a variety of situations with patience and good judgement.
- Must be a current high school student (or equivalent) in need of volunteer hours.
- Must possess or be willing to obtain a Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Standard First Aid and CPR training an asset.
- Availability for a variety of shifts, including weekdays and possibly weekends, during camp season.
Physical Requirements:
Sharon Museum and Gardens is an open-air museum located north of Toronto on 7 acres of land. As this is a large site with multiple heritage buildings, volunteers will be required to move between these buildings and around the site as needed. The ability to lift 30 pounds is an asset.
