Duties & Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, rebuild, adjust, and test locomotives, diesel and gas engines, transmissions, APUs, and hydraulic, pneumatic, braking, and air-compressor systems.
- Troubleshoot and maintain locomotives, shop machinery, and related equipment using precision measuring instruments, diagnostic tools, and testing procedures.
- Set up and operate conventional and CNC machine shop equipment for drilling, milling, turning, and boring.
- Operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and elevated work platforms, and use hand, power, and welding tools required for the trade.
- Read and work from blueprints, sketches, manufacturer patterns, and technical specifications.
- Inspect equipment, identify defects, confirm repairs, and follow safe work practices.
Requirements
- Valid Ontario Certificate of Qualification as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician 421A, Truck and Coach Technician 310T, or Automotive Service Technician 310S.
- 3–5 years of hands-on trade experience in mechanical repair, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Working knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
- Experience reading and working from blueprints and technical specifications.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to safe work practices.
- Must pass a criminal record check, employment reference check, and education verification.
- Experience maintaining and troubleshooting locomotives and auxiliary power units.
- Experience working in a unionized environment.
- Familiarity with Windows-based computer applications.
