Summary
Reporting to the Laselle Consultants’ Project Director, the Substations Design Engineer will be responsible for completion of designs on a wide range of transmission and distribution projects. This role will appeal to individuals who are have direct experience in the transmission and distribution utility industry. The primary focus is the experience in the areas of substation, P&C and SCADA design from the 25kV to 500kV levels, as well as an understanding of all disciplines of substations design and interactions (Telecommunications, and Lines).
Key Accountabilities
- Design of electrical substation facilities including site and buswork layouts, equipment installation, grounding, controls, protection, metering and complete the studies needed for projects.
- Development of Design Basis Memoradums (DBMs) and Engineering Scope of Work documents.
- Deliver accurate and thorough designs that meet applicable industry standards, client design standards and engineering practices.
- Ensure designs are compatible with good construction practices and overall due diligence.
- Actively communicate and coordinate with other project team members with different specialties.
- Creating detailed engineering scope documents from a high level functional document.
- Prepare cost/time estimates when requested.
- Ensure accuracy of return data for records updates.
- Identification of material required, and in some cases specify devices and equipment to be used in the design and construction.
- Provide technical support during construction and commissioning.
- Review the designs underway by external contractors to ensure compliance within scope and with our client standards.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
- Member of Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) with good standing
- Direct utility experience in substation design with the HV equipment ranging from 25kV to 500kV
- Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
- Broad understanding of Protection and Control (P&C), SCADA, Telecom, as well as substation & P&C design.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to take a leadership role for setting standards, troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to work in a team environment, positively influence others, and develop strong internal and external relationships.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and manage a wide variety of issues on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Proven track record of good performance and attendance.
- Excellent time management and organization skills, ability to multi task.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic changing environment
- Strong team player
- Experience working in SAP would be an asset.
- Knowledge of Microstation and Autocad would be an asset.
Experience with the following:
- Substation & Bus Layouts.
- Transmission Utility Protection & Control.
- SCADA Design and configuration
- High Voltage Power Equipment installation (including current transformers, instrument transformers, disconnect switches, circuit breakers and surge arrestors).
- Substation and bus layouts, construction, operation and maintenance practices.
- AC and DC supplies.
- Ground grid design.
- Substation construction practices.
- Substation and operating and maintenance practices.
- Knowledge of industry standards such as CSA, IEC, IEEE, ANSI. Industry Canada, AESO, WECC, and NERC.
