About Us
The Niagara West Adult Learning Centre (NWALC) has been helping residents of Lincoln, West Lincoln and Grimsby to improve their reading, writing, numeracy and digital skills for over 25 years.
The Role
Our Board of Directors is a volunteer governing body that provides strategic oversight, financial stewardship, and community leadership for NWALC. Board members are ambassadors for adult literacy in West Niagara, connecting the organization to the broader community, helping diversify our funding, and ensuring we remain accountable to the learners we serve.
Time Commitment
- Board meetings are held monthly, approximately 10 per year, plus Committee meetings.
- 4-6 hours per month, including committee work, board meetings, document review and occasional special events.
Key Responsibilities
All board members are expected to:
- Know the organization’s mission, programs, policies, and needs.
- Follow bylaws, policies, and board resolutions.
- Maintain confidentiality about internal matters.
- Prepare for, attend, and actively participate in board meetings.
- Serve as an advocate and ambassador for NWALC in the community.
- Participate in one or more committees and contribute to policy and strategic planning.
- Live within or in travel distance of Niagara Region (Beamsville, Ontario)

We are seeking community-minded individuals, located within or near Niagara Region, who are passionate about literacy, education, and opportunity. We especially welcome candidates who bring experience or expertise in one or more of the following areas:

› Marketing, communications & public relations
› Financial oversight & accounting
› Fundraising, grants & resource development
› Legal, regulatory & risk management
› Events planning & community engagement
› Adult literacy, education & training
› Community partnerships & networks
We are seeking those with Board experience; however, we welcome first-time board members who bring enthusiasm, lived experience, and a genuine willingness to learn. What matters most is a real commitment to our mission and to the communities we serve.
