Company Overview
Advanced Equipment Inc. is a Richmond-based manufacturer with more than 30 years of experience designing and manufacturing customized industrial freezing systems for food-processing customers worldwide.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing practical mechanical solutions for custom industrial equipment, from initial concept and engineering calculations through detailed design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning.
The role is well suited for an engineer who can independently design complete machinery or equipment systems, make sound technical decisions, and gradually take on greater responsibility for design reviews, equipment costing, standardization, and technical leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Design customized industrial freezing systems, conveyors, structural assemblies, and related mechanical equipment.
- Develop equipment concepts, layouts, 3D models, manufacturing drawings, bills of materials, and engineering documentation.
- Perform mechanical calculations and select major components such as motors, gearboxes, bearings, shafts, drives, and structural supports.
- Review customer requirements and translate them into practical, manufacturable equipment designs.
- Provide technical input for equipment costing, material take-offs, labour estimates, and quotations.
- Work closely with production, fabrication, assembly, electrical, sales, project, and installation teams.
- Provide shop-floor support and resolve design, fabrication, fit-up, and assembly issues.
- Troubleshoot mechanical problems during manufacturing, testing, installation, startup, and commissioning.
- Participate in design reviews and identify technical, manufacturing, installation, and performance risks.
- Improve equipment reliability, manufacturability, cost efficiency, and installation effectiveness.
- Support design standardization, engineering change processes, and lessons-learned documentation.
- Provide technical guidance to designers and junior engineering staff when required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Minimum seven years of relevant mechanical design experience.
- Strong experience designing custom industrial equipment, machinery, conveyors, material-handling systems, food-processing equipment, or similar systems.
- Demonstrated ability to take equipment from customer requirements and initial concept through detailed design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning.
- Experience designing complete machinery or equipment systems, rather than only individual components or drawings based on established designs.
- Strong hands-on proficiency with SolidWorks and working knowledge of AutoCAD or similar software.
- Experience preparing and reviewing manufacturing drawings, assemblies, bills of materials, and technical documentation.
- Strong understanding of weldments, sheet metal, machining, fabrication, mechanical assemblies, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience with mechanical calculations, component selection, GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacturing.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working in both an office and manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in any of the following would be considered an asset:
- Industrial freezing, refrigeration, food-processing, packaging, or conveyor equipment.
- Equipment sizing, heat transfer, thermodynamics, structural calculations, or FEA.
- Cost estimation, material take-offs, labour-hour estimation, or manufacturing planning.
- Equipment installation, startup, commissioning, or field troubleshooting.
- Technical leadership, design review, mentoring, or engineering standardization.
- P.Eng. designation or eligibility for registration in British Columbia.
