About the Role
The position is responsible for providing support to the Veterinarians and RVTs in a fast-paced environment that primarily deals with critical situations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follow established procedures in order to assist veterinarians with examinations and facilitate the flow of clients and patients through the out-patient appointments.
- Educate clients regarding preventative medicine and vaccination requirements. Recommend laboratory procedures, such as pre-anesthetic profiles, geriatric screening, fecal analysis, urinalysis, Lyme and heartworm testing, FeLV testing, etc.
- Accurately perform routine in-house laboratory procedures. Appropriately prepare and handle specimens.
- Assists with the admission and discharge of patients, creating consent forms and estimates, taking deposits/final payments.
- Documents and maintains proper medical record keeping.
- Assists Veterinarians and RVTs with patient triage on presentation, examinations, diagnostics, treatments, and procedures.
- Assist with radiographs, ultrasounds and CT scans following proper safety procedures.
- Sterilize instruments, prepare surgery packs and assist with surgery preparation.
- Keeps emergency area clean, stocked and prepared for emergencies (following shift checklist)
- Handling euthanasia related tasks (consent, billing, aftercare, post-euthanasia paperwork)
- Willing to go above and beyond to exceed clients’ expectations.
- Care of boarding and hospitalized patients including cage cleaning, exercising, feeding, observation for signs of illness, parasites and disease control, laundry, bathing and dipping procedures.
- Assist with rotations of patients in kennel as needed. Ensure that all patients receive food, water and needed medication on time. Maintain any treatments requested by the doctor and document all services rendered.
- Ensures all equipment in the treatment area is properly maintained.
Ideal Candidate:

- Communication Skills: Build solid relationships with clients through effective communication.
- Veterinary Office Assistant Certification preferred, or experience in Veterinary field as a Veterinary Assistant.
- Ability to recognize and establish priorities and to respond efficiently and effectively under stress.
- Customer service experience an asset.
- High level of professionalism
- Strong attention to detail
- Be able to prioritize workload.
- Be proactive and take initiatives to work effectively with little or no supervision.
- Be flexible to work some evenings/weekends/overnights and statutory holidays.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
