The AOS Tradesman (Heavy Duty Mechanic) is responsible for following the implemented maintenance program, monitoring condition/capacity, and recommending adjustments to the resource allocation and maintenance program for airport equipment. The incumbent will work on the inspection, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and overhaul of airport vehicles, heavy equipment, emergency response vehicles, and mechanical systems. The position supports the Airport's preventative maintenance program and ensures the reliability, safety, and operational readiness of all fleet and equipment assets required to maintain airport operations.
The Heavy Duty Mechanic is responsible for maintaining airport fleet assets including Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles, snow removal equipment, heavy equipment, light-duty vehicles, generators, pumps, mechanical systems, and specialized airport equipment. The position provides technical expertise, recommends repairs and replacements, and assists with equipment procurement and lifecycle planning.
The incumbent works within a safety-sensitive environment and is required to respond to operational and emergency situations as required.
Responsible for:
§ When required, the position leads an operations team to accomplish the required tasks (i.e. winter chargehand).
§ In the event of an emergency, performs emergency response duties to minimize damage to life and property. Providing effective fire suppression activities in the event of an aircraft crash, aircraft fire or other emergency on airport property or surrounding area. Providing first aid as needed.
§ Maintaining currency with all rules, regulations and changes related to these job duties as regulated by Transport Canada.
§ Maintain inventory levels for parts, consumables, tools, and shop supplies.
§ Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.
Job Duties:

Fleet and Equipment Maintenance
§ Inspect, diagnose, repair, service, and overhaul heavy-duty diesel equipment.
§ Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on airport vehicles and equipment.
§ Maintain Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicles and related emergency response equipment.
§ Maintain snowplows, blowers, sweepers, sanders, loaders, graders, tractors, mowers, and other airport maintenance equipment.
§ Maintain light-duty vehicles, trailers, generators, pumps, compressors, and associated equipment.
§ Troubleshoot hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, electrical, cooling, brake, suspension, and drivetrain systems.
§ Perform welding, fabrication, and equipment modifications as required.
§ Conduct inspections and safety checks in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and regulatory requirements.
§ Coordinate warranty repairs and external contractor services when required.
§ Maintains maintenance records, inspection reports, service logs, and regulatory documentation for fleet and equipment assets.
§ Maintain maintenance schedules and preventative maintenance programs.
§ Recommend equipment replacement, upgrades, and lifecycle planning initiatives.
Airport Operations Support
§ Ability to obtain and maintain an Airside Vehicle Operator Permit (AVOP).
§ Assist with winter maintenance activities and operational requirements as necessary.
§ Operating heavy, light, and small equipment, including routine maintenance as required.
§ Assist with airside inspections and operational activities as directed.
§ Support maintenance of airport grounds, buildings, and infrastructure as required.
§ Installation and maintenance of fences and signage.
§ Monitoring, analyzing, and reporting aircraft movement surface conditions.
§ Emergency intervention duties, as required.
§ Attend safety meetings, training sessions, and operational briefings.
§ Respond to public inquiries and operational concerns as required.
§ Adhering to all airport safety and security regulations.
§ Monitoring and managing the safety around all airport areas.
§ Observes safe work methods, uses safety equipment, and secures worksites from safety hazards as necessary.
§ Maintains essential records of work performed.
Qualifications:
Required
§ Valid Interprovincial Journeyman or Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Certification.
§ Red Seal Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Certification. Recognized provincial or national certification.
§ Strong mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diagnostic troubleshooting skills.
§ Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and technical drawings.
§ Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems.
§ Strong communication skills, both verbal and written in English.
Preferred:
§ Willingness to learn to operate heavy equipment.
§ Willingness to be trained on snow removal equipment and winter operations.
§ Valid Class 1 or 3 Driver's Licence with Air Brake Endorsement, or ability to obtain.
§ Experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic, electrical, and diesel-powered snow removal equipment.
§ Experience maintaining airport equipment, snow removal equipment, or municipal/public works fleets.
§ Experience in a safety-sensitive work environment.
§ Experience supervising crews or acting in a chargehand capacity.
§ Welding and fabrication experience.
Physical Requirements:
§ This role requires the ability to work in various weather conditions. Activities are carried out regardless of weather or working conditions, within required safety standards.
§ This role demands good physical health, including ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and equipment
§ The incumbent must be able to work at heights or on ladders without signs of acrophobia and in confined spaces and smoke-filled areas without signs of claustrophobia.
§ The incumbent must be able to work in close proximity to active runways and aircraft maneuvering areas.
§ The ARFF role requires wearing heavy protective clothing, often in non-air-conditioned environments and outdoors in all weather. The work requires a high level of cardiovascular and physical fitness and dexterity.
Experience:
§ Minimum five (5) years' experience as a Heavy Duty Mechanic.
§ Experience maintaining diesel-powered heavy equipment.
§ Experience with preventative maintenance programs.
Hours of Work:
§ Up to 40 hours per week.
§ Hours of work are scheduled between 00:00 and 24:00, seven days a week, subject to flight times and regulations.
§ Participation in standby, callout, and emergency response duties may be required.
