This position is required to work in person at the City’s Traffic Operations facility. Work location is subject to change at the discretion of the City due to operational demands.
Position Overview
The Traffic Operations Technician is responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining Traffic Control Devices, including signs, pavement markings, and guard rails, in accordance with provincial and City regulations, standards, specifications and bylaws on City and regional roads, and within park facilities. This position acts as the primary field lead on assigned job sites, responsible for technical decisions, work order completion, quality control, health and safety compliance, and providing direction and support to staff and contractors.
Responsibilities
The Traffic Operations Technician will be responsible for:
Organizing, coordinating, installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, pavement markings, parking signage, barricades, guiderails, delineators, and other traffic control devices.
Ensuring work activities comply with applicable legislation, City standards, contract specifications, Occupational Health and Safety requirements, and technical procedures.
Reading and interpreting plans, maps and construction drawings to determine sign placement locations in the field
Performing site inspections, condition assessments and identification of deficiencies related to traffic signs and other transportation assets
Using computerized systems and other technology daily to identify maintenance needs, maintain electronic records and update inventories.
Performing pavement marking layout, installation and removal using a paint machine and pavement marking grinder
Operating light and medium duty trucks and utilizes specialty equipment such as a hydraulic crane truck, post pounder/puller or tow behind auger
Plans and performs set-up and take-down of signs and other traffic control devices related to road closures, detour routes and traffic control plans.
Provide general maintenance, housekeeping and inventory of tools, equipment, supplies and materials within work areas.
Ability to perform physically demanding work including lifting, climbing, overhead work, and working outdoors in all weather conditions.
Requirements
You have a 3-year College Diploma in Transportation Engineering Technology, Civil Engineering Technology or a related field, and at least one year of related experience.
You have strong technical skills and the ability to apply them effectively in a collaborative team environment. You demonstrate excellent organizational abilities, sound judgment, and a proactive approach to your work. You are able to manage competing priorities, communicate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders, and take initiative to identify solutions to problems as they arise.
A valid Class G driver’s license is required with an acceptable driver’s abstract with no more than three (3) driving related convictions or an accumulation of no more than three (3) demerit points in the previous three (3) years prior to the date of hire, and/or no administrative driver license (ADLS) suspensions.
