Position Summary
The Cook is responsible for planning and preparing nutritious meals and snacks that meet approximately two-thirds of each child's daily nutritional requirements in accordance with the Canada Food Guide, Alberta Nutrition Guidelines, and Alberta Child Care Licensing requirements.
This role also ensures the kitchen is maintained in a clean, safe, and sanitary condition while working collaboratively with the Director and daycare staff to support the overall well-being of the children.
Key Responsibilities
As our Cook, you will:
- Plan and prepare nutritious breakfasts, lunches, and snacks for children.
- Develop creative weekly menus that comply with the Canada Food Guide and Alberta Child Care Licensing requirements.
- Accommodate food allergies, dietary restrictions, and special nutritional needs.
- Post weekly menus and communicate approved menu changes.
- Purchase food and kitchen supplies while managing the kitchen budget responsibly.
- Maintain accurate food inventory and minimize waste through proper food storage and safe handling practices.
- Ensure all food is prepared, stored, and served according to Alberta Health food safety standards.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen, including appliances, dishes, utensils, and food preparation areas.
- Prepare meals and snacks for field trips and special daycare events as required.
- Maintain an organized collection of recipes for operational continuity.
- Communicate regularly with the Director regarding kitchen operations, supplies, equipment, and food-related concerns.
- Participate in staff meetings and support the daycare team in providing high-quality care for children.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
We're looking for someone who has:
- Post-secondary training in Food Services, Culinary Arts, Nutrition, or a related field or equivalent experience preparing meals for groups.
- Knowledge of the Canada Food Guide and child nutrition.
- A valid Food Safety/Safe Food Handling Certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
- ECE level 1 certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
- Experience preparing meals in a childcare, school, healthcare, or institutional setting is an asset.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- A positive attitude and a genuine passion for serving children.
