Job Overview
Iron Horse Trenching Inc. is seeking an experienced Heavy Duty Mechanic to support our specialized trenching operations and maintain a fleet of heavy civil construction equipment. This role will primarily focus on diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining our custom one-pass trenching equipment, along with supporting other heavy equipment in the fleet.
Our trenchers are unique, custom-built hydraulic machines used in environmental and civil construction projects across Canada and the United States. We are looking for someone who is highly skilled in hydraulics, electrical troubleshooting, and complex mechanical diagnostics, and who enjoys problem-solving in the field and shop environment.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical issues on custom trenching equipment
- Troubleshoot complex equipment failures and develop practical repair solutions
- Perform preventative maintenance and inspections on trenchers and support equipment
- Read and interpret hydraulic and electrical schematics
- Repair and maintain pumps, valves, cylinders, motors, sensors, wiring systems, and controls
- Support field crews during breakdowns and critical operations
- Work closely with operators, supervisors, and management to improve equipment reliability and efficiency
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and communicate repair requirements
- Assist with repairs and maintenance on additional heavy equipment and support fleet as required
Qualifications
- Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic certification preferred (or equivalent experience)
- Strong hydraulic troubleshooting and repair experience is required
- Strong electrical diagnostic experience on heavy equipment is required
- Experience with custom equipment, trenchers, or specialized heavy civil equipment is considered a major asset
- Ability to read hydraulic and electrical schematics
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Comfortable working independently in both shop and field environments
- Welding and fabrication experience is considered an asset
- Valid driver’s license required
- Willingness to travel and work extended hours when required
