Position Summary
The Planner is responsible for coordinating planning and development initiatives within the municipality. This role involves preparing reports, reviewing development applications, and contributing to policies and strategies that guide sustainable growth and recreation planning. The Planner works closely with internal teams and external developers and agencies to ensure compliance with municipal regulations and to support community development goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Review, analyze, and process development applications, including minor variances, zoning amendments, subdivision plans, site plans, and official plan amendments.
- Conduct research and prepare detailed planning reports, presentations, and recommendations for municipal committees and Council.
- Develop, implement, and monitor municipal planning policies, regulations, and guidelines in alignment with community goals and provincial legislation.
- Support the preparation and updating of official plans, zoning by-laws, and other planning documents.
- Provide advice and guidance to applicants, consultants, and members of the public on planning processes and requirements.
- Conduct site visits and assessments to evaluate land use and development proposals.
- Collaborate with internal departments to coordinate planning efforts related to infrastructure, and community development.
- Represent the municipality at public meetings, open houses, and consultations to provide information on planning initiatives.
- Monitor and analyze trends, best practices, and policy changes in planning and development.
- Assist with the coordination of special projects or studies related to long-term planning and environmental sustainability.

Education & Certifications
- Degree in Urban Planning, Geography, or a related field.
- Membership or eligibility for membership with a professional planning organization (e.g., Canadian Institute of Planners).
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in municipal planning or a related field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Planning Knowledge: Strong understanding of the Planning Act of Ontario, municipal planning legislation, policies, and procedures.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, GIS software and other tools used in land-use planning and analysis.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prepare and present clear reports and recommendations.
- Organization: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize work, meet deadlines, and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Problem-Solving: Effective decision-making skills, with the ability to address complex planning challenges.
- Collaboration: Ability to collaborate effectively with planning staff, consultants, and members of the public.
- Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy in preparing documents, maps, and analyses.
Working Conditions
- Work is primarily office-based role with periodic site visits to assess development proposals or gather data.
- Standard business hours, Monday to Friday, with occasional evening or weekend work required for public meetings or special projects.
- Cognitive demands include organizing technical findings into clear, objective narratives for reports and presentations and exercising sound judgment when interpreting policies or resolving competing priorities among interest-holders.
- Physical demands include extended periods of sitting and looking at a computer screen.
