Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our team in supporting the maintenance and operation of Highway 407 in Durham Region. This position plays a key role in maintaining safe, reliable highway infrastructure through year‑round roadway operations, patrols, and emergency response. The role involves monitoring road conditions, supporting incident and traffic control activities, and operating a wide range of maintenance and winter‑operations equipment. The ideal candidate will contribute to general roadway upkeep, asset inspection, and data collection while ensuring accurate documentation of daily activities and events. Working under the direction of supervisory staff, this position supports both routine maintenance and urgent response needs to keep the highway network safe and fully operational.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute duties at direction of Manager, Supervisor and/ or Foreman
- Patrol & operate a patrol vehicle assessing road conditions and determining action required - act to rectify issues and/ or advise Supervisor and/ or Foreman to assure issues are promptly addressed.
- Provide traffic control services and assist emergency/ incident response efforts – set up and removal of traffic control devices and/ or lane and shoulder closures required for maintenance operations and emergency/ incident response working near live traffic, Operation of an Emergency Response Unit.
- Maintain detailed and accurate daily records, complete a daily patrol diary, and collect and document incident data.
- Assess road conditions and dispatch, coordinate, and direct winter maintenance activities.
- Operation of a combination plow and wing unit safely during winter operations – unit configuration consists of tandem trucks with “V” or “U” body spreaders, uni-directional or reversible front plows, right-side wing plows, and/or DLA anti-icing equipment.
- Operation and maintenance of equipment (e.g., sweepers, torches, electric and/or gas-powered saws, snow removal equipment, telehandler, chainsaws, tractor, string trimmers, backpack blowers, utility vehicle, emergency response unit, tandem axle dump trucks, light to heavy duty pickup trucks, traffic control devices including trailer mount attenuators and arrow boards, etc.).
- General roadway maintenance – litter and debris removal, fence repair, landscaping, road surface repairs, winter maintenance, ditch grading, pond maintenance, bridge washing and maintenance, road sweeping, concrete placement and repairs, repairs to highway infrastructure (e.g., crash systems, signs, steel beam guide rail, etc.).
- Highway asset management, inspection, and data collection.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
- Basic knowledge of routine road maintenance activities
- General knowledge of the equipment and vehicle fleet
- DZ License Required (Minimum)
- Comfortable working in close proximity to live traffic
- Clean Driver Abstract
- Knowledge of OTM Book 7 Traffic Control
- Team Player
- Capable of working safely and competently - unaccompanied and/ or without direct supervision
- Required to work inside or outside regardless of weather conditions
- Shift work and potentially long hours required, general schedule flexibility is a must
- Available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays in alignment with operational needs and requirements
- On-call availability required from time to time
- Demonstrated Reliability: Attendance and Punctuality
- Ability to lift up to 80 lbs (36 kg)
- Complete, accurate, and legible note taking
- Basic computer skills – Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet, etc.
