ABOUT ENGLISH OUTDOORS
English Outdoors (EO) runs immersive summer programs for international teenagers across the UK and North America. Our Toronto camp brings together students from around the world for a truly unique English learning experience — one that happens not in a classroom, but all over the city.
THIS ISN’T YOUR TYPICAL ESL ROLE
At English Outdoors (EO), the city is your classroom. Classes take place at carefully chosen indoor and outdoor venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn — from Brookfield Place and St Lawrence Market to STACKT Market and beyond. Lessons are built around authentic speaking practice, fluency, and confidence-building, with Toronto-themed topics and on-the-move city excursions — walking tours, landmarks, and urban parks — woven right in. All classes are capped at a maximum of 8 students, giving every learner plenty of space to speak and grow.
This is a seasonal, part-time position — perfect for K-12 teachers looking for summer work, or traveling teachers between contracts.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
We are looking for someone who:
- Holds an ESL teaching certification (CELTA, TEFL, TESOL, or equivalent) or a teaching qualification
- Has previous ESL or classroom teaching experience
- Is confident, engaging, and comfortable teaching in non-traditional, outdoor, and public settings
- Is comfortable leading, teaching, and keeping a class organised while on the move — excursions are a core part of the lesson, not a break from it
- Is creative and adaptable — able to bring energy and spontaneity to lessons while keeping them structured
- Communicates clearly and connects easily with teenagers aged 14–17
- Is punctual, organized, and reliable
- Knows Toronto well and is comfortable navigating the city independently
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Deliver engaging, student-centered ESL lessons at rotating Toronto venues
- Follow detailed EO-made lesson plans while bringing your own energy and personality to each class
- Deliver city excursions as a built-in part of the curriculum – each lesson plan includes a structured, EO-organized excursion complete with topic, route, and full teacher guidance, so you can focus on facilitating great language learning
- Monitor student progress, wellbeing, and participation
- Communicate with the Head Teacher and Academic Manager as needed
- Complete prep, admin, and any required reporting
