Overview
Protection Security Investigations is seeking a highly alert, professional, and compassionate Security Guard for a night shelter / supportive housing environment. This role focuses on maintaining a safe, controlled, and respectful space for residents, staff, and visitors.
Security personnel at this location are expected to balance firm rule enforcement with strong de-escalation and communication skills. This is an active role, requiring sound judgment, situational awareness, and the ability to respond effectively to a range of behavioral, medical, and safety-related incidents.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a visible and approachable presence within the shelter to promote safety, order, and reassurance
- Monitor access points, ensuring only authorized individuals enter the facility
- Enforce site rules, policies, and occupancy guidelines in a fair and consistent manner
- Conduct routine patrols of interior and exterior areas, including sleeping quarters, common areas, and perimeter
- Respond to incidents involving disturbances, conflicts, intoxication, or non-compliance
- Utilize verbal de-escalation and conflict resolution techniques to manage tense situations
- Support staff with resident interactions while maintaining professional boundaries
- Remove individuals from the property when required under the Trespass to Property Act (Ontario)
- Conduct lawful arrests under the Criminal Code of Canada when necessary and appropriate
- Monitor for medical or mental health concerns and notify staff or emergency services as required
- Document all incidents thoroughly, including reports, statements, and observations
- Liaise with emergency services (police, fire, EMS) when situations require escalation
- Maintain awareness of safety risks, including fire hazards, drug paraphernalia, or environmental concerns
Core Competencies
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Trespass to Property Act (Ontario)
- Criminal Code of Canada (assault, mischief, theft, citizen’s arrest)
- Proven ability to de-escalate conflict and manage difficult interactions
- Professional communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to remain calm and controlled in high-stress or unpredictable situations
- Strong report writing and documentation skills
- Situational awareness and sound decision-making under pressure
- Ability to balance enforcement with empathy and professionalism
Qualifications
- Valid Ontario Security Guard Licence
- Valid First Aid & CPR Certification (required)
- Experience in security, social services, healthcare, or similar environments is an asset
- Training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or similar is highly preferred
- Ability to lawfully intervene when required
- Physically capable of standing, walking, and responding to incidents
Working Conditions

- Shifts may include overnights, weekends, and holidays

- Represent PSI with professionalism, consistency, and reliability
