Reporting to the Foreman, the Paver Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the asphalt paver. This role involves operating paving machines to spread and level hot mix asphalt on the subgrade of highways and streets. Using stakes and level gauges, the paver operator ensures that the asphalt mix is placed to the specified grade and thickness, meeting project specifications.
How You’ll Add Value

Operate a paver and other heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner

Perform daily maintenance and safety inspections to ensure the equipment is inoptimalworking condition

Preheat the paving screed before asphalt placement andmonitor/control asphalt mixture temperatures

Manually light burners to start the heating units of the paver and regulate screed temperature

Operate controls to lower the screed auger, manage the hopper, and navigate the paver's direction effectively

Align the paving machine to receive asphalt from dump trucks andmaintaina consistent flow of material into the hopper while safely coordinating with trucks

Monitor the distribution of paving materials along the screed and adjust its direction toeliminatevoids at curbs and joints

Ensure the proper application of asphalt by accurately smoothing it to the desired height, width, and depth

Attach and adjust screed extensions to accommodate varying project width

Train and guide new employees on the safe and efficient operation of the paver and related equipment

Actively contribute to Volker Stevin Contracting’s safety culture, promoting a safe and productive work environment
What You Bring
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. is preferred

Minimumof3+ years of experience as a Paving Operator isrequired

Minimumof5+yearsofexperience within the road construction industry

Knowledge of road construction materials, road constructionprocessesand industry requirements

Understanding of computerized controls and electronics

Ability to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 lbs.Regularly
-
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with a Driver’s Abstract showing no more than 6 demerits and no major infractions
